Pace (or lack of) 09:19 - Dec 3 with 542 viewsDJR

Is lack of pace one reason why we are struggling?

Admittedly, Davis has pace but I am not sure anyone else has. And when we last got promoted we had Burns, Hutchinson and Jackson who could all put on the burners. Clarke and Williams were also pretty speedy going forward from full back.

If nothing else, a speedy attacker can open up space for others even if they don't get the ball.

It's certainly a factor. We've got Philogene and Clarke who are both right footed, playing on the left, so more often than not will be cutting in. And on the right, we have similar regarding Egeli, and McAteer, who seems afraid to take his man on.

We no longer utilise the overlap, especially on the right, because Furlong isn't very attack-minded.

On paper we have some quick players. Commentators last night were saying mackateer has lots of pace but we are playing the ball to feet instead of into space. Our strikers have pace but we smash the ball at the them rather than playing into the channels or into the gaps in defence.

We dont have any real speed merchants. Charlton did and look what problems they caused up despite not being a a great side 'on paper'. Speed kills at every level.

Pace requires space to utilise it, when teams sit deep it tends to be negated

And it needs the ball to be put in the right place to run onto, who is doing that ? Nobody

That is true up to a point. But Blackburn, for example, didn't exactly get 10 men behind the ball all game.

And we've certainly got into positions down the right all season where someone with pace would surely get past the full back.

The second goal at Oxford was down to pace too.

🤞🏼 For Burns coming back soon (on the bench by Christmas?).

Whilst it's less effective when people sit deep, you do still need runners breaking the lines

I'd like to see a speedster option upfront and on the wing ideally, Burns may bring that back but we need a bit more

I know he is probably no where near ready but Mendel-Idowu looks rapid, it would have been interesting to see him in the League Cup at least, what did we have to lose?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

In his Burnley Prem season O’Shea was in the top 6 fastest players in the league, so he’s no slouch.
This was from an article in Feb ‘24. Funnily enough Ogbene was 2nd on the list and Carragaher had just compared him to Henry!?
I’ve always wondered if we really need the left sided centre back to be the one with pace, to help cover Davis getting forwards.

It's speed of thought as much as anything, one touch passing straight of the training ground is the difference, example being chappers when he dropped and played that first time ball over the top for Burns to run onto..

Over 90 minutes very few passes are to a player on the run. Most passes are received at walking pace.

We need to more decisive, we need to have players looking to make it happen. Same applies to Walton to me he seems to hesitate before passing out from the back, which enables the receiver to be put under pressure. If we don’t have players who can play that way then adapt approach and play to our strengths.
