Can we get Akpom or Szmodics closer to Hirst when we're breaking? 16:49 - Dec 5 with 279 viewsNthQldITFC

Hirsty ploughs an lone and isolated furrow up there and, I think, finds it hard to control a longish ball and hold it up with two CBs on him whilst we get the support up to him. For me, he can do the lone forward role (he's a great runner and closer-downer), but he needs to be able to lay it off first time to a supporting player rather than try to get it under whilst the support reaches him.

I think our supporting three are just too far away from Hirst when we are coming out of defence. I'd like to see our central 10 not dropping in for the ball, but turning and making an anticipatory run past Hirst as soon as we've got a foot on the ball at the back. I think these are more the sort of roles that both Akpom and Szmodics have played very effectively before, have they not?

Davis has been doing a bit of the inverted thing, which I like, and I'd like to see Davis or whoever's playing with Matusiwa in the middle going into the space that our central 10 is vacating, making us a sort of 3-2-3-1-1 on the break, rather than what feels like 4-2-3---1 or 3-3-3---1.

Musings from a walk.

Would love to see us switch it up a little and try 4-3-1-2

You can't not play at least one of Philogene and Clarke though, but I do see where you're coming from.

Isn't that actual problem when akpom does play the 10 that hes pretty much alongside hirst so our pivot doesn't have another player to pass too infront if them. Thats how ive always seen it with akpom.

a niche perspective

I utterly hate the inverted full back thing. I saw it play out down here at Swansea and it killed the players and led to a manager being sacked. And now we’re blunting our best provider of chances. It’s nuts. Neither Philogene nor Clarke have done enough to show they should be prioritised over Leif.

I don't see why it shouldn't work as a tactic used on and off throughout a game. It relies on good awareness of all involved, but it's the sort of change that can be a real jolt to an opposition defence. Maybe it's the sort of thing we should have added into a better functioning team later in the season, but I like the option.

I think Leif has both overlapped and underlapped Philogene on decoy runs when he scored that flurry of goals, didn't he, so it probably has worked for us already.

I’m coming from a place of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. It’s obviously not working so far, as Leif has only a couple of assists. That’s not all down to the system though, as part of it is because he’s suffering with Philogene and Clarke who both ignore him (and they aren’t replacing Leif’s potential for assists either).

It could probably work if we worked as a team and didn’t have as many Prima Donna’s on the pitch who want to go it alone. Whether he cuts inside or hugs the line is a moot point if nobody passes to him when he’s in good positions.

Edit- reflecting on it, I’m being naive. I’d like it to be as it was but the reality is we have to find a way to make it work with these players, Philogene and Clarke included. We’re not going to not play ~£35 million of signings. So yeah, we need to try different things, but Leif and ultimately us have suffered from those signings.
