| Any BMW owners on here... 11:53 - Dec 12 with 1423 views | Bent_double | who've had problems with a door not opening? My son bought a used 1 series a couple of months ago - from Aspire Cars in Ipswich, now the passenger side door won't open at all. Apparently its a common problem on BMWs - quality German engineering ,eh! But the warranty doesn't cover it, and if it's the actuator (the device that locks/unlocks the door) it could cost £300-£400 in a BMW garage with their parts. He's not a happy bunny.... | |

| Any BMW owners on here... on 18:46 - Dec 12 by Bent_double | 3 months. He bought it just before we went to the Charlton game... We did ask about the warranty during the purchase, as he know he would be up in Scotland soon after. Don't worry, they said, repairs can be carried out anywhere in the country. From what he's told me, it's the company that's providing the warranty who are telling him this part isn't covered. Obviously not 100% sure what the problem is, but I think he's gonna get it repaired, then try and make a claim based on what the problem was. You're right though, I would be livid if this happened so soon after spending a considerable amount of money on a car and would expect it fixed f-o-c. |
Would only add that I would speak to the garage before getting it fixed. They maybe happy for him to use a third party but will have an eye on the cost and could want to repair it themselves/through their network.

Should this not be covered under consumer rights act if under 6 months from purchase ?

Trouble is, there wasn't a problem when he bought it, it's only just happened, so the dealership will just deny responsibility, surely

How old.is the car? Private sale is "sold as seen" so if the car develops a problem is on the purchaser. But second cars from dealers should still meet certain standards and a door opening, struggling to see how that's up to standard. Would imagine it's an MOT failure so it's not a minor issue. The 3 month warrantee is a legal minimum but that shouldn't effect your consumer rights. Hopefully someone will be along soon who is an expert in this stuff. "Complaining cow" on FB might be worth messaging, she knows her sh1t.

5 years old, low mileage, excellent condition - a 'prestige' car if you like, he wanted a good one after having my old Corsa for the last 4 years! Its the company providing the warranty (Warranty First) who are claiming its not covered. I've told him to contact a BMW dealership locally as all approved BMW used cars should have a 12 month warranty too which includes electrical and mechanical faults.

Might be worth sending a tweet to Lawrence Whittaker, he seems to be a decent bloke and he owns Warranty Wise.

| Any BMW owners on here... on 11:59 - Dec 12 by BloomBlue | Buy Chinese, they're cheaper and quality is better than German. According to my mad BMW mate, its a well-known problem on BMW series 1 cars, 'failing electronic door lock actuators' |
The German brands still rank above Chinese in most reliability surveys from owners. With MG commonly being one of the least reliable. Not to mention many Chinese brands have whole or partial state ownership so you are literally finding authoritarianism (and worse). https://www.whatcar.com/news/reliability-survey-most-reliable-cars-brands/n26159
