Noticed a take down of this essay in the Telegraph today so went and read the abstract (only) here:

Got to say, its one of the few times I can happily side with a Telegraph columnist, but what say yous?
For me as a white western male, i'm aware of the limitations of the value of my opinion especially when the argument is partly about cultural norms and constructs, but that said, FGM is just wrong isn't it? |  |

It certainly is. Barbaric, and really a tool of control and oppression.
Also I don't like seeing it compared to the male equivalent, which is unhelpful. For men the comparable impact on the recipient is close to zero. |  |

In my view, any circumcision of children not performed for medical reasons is barbaric. I'm willing to concede though, that there is a huge range within that term "circumcision" from relatively minor to extreme. I'd also agree that the worst practices causing lifelong suffering and pain affect women disproportionately.
That's my view based on my principles. However I'm not qualified to judge the cultural aspects of female circumcision in certain African cultures, male circumcision in Judaism, etc...
It is probably true that people assume that all female circumcision is towards the extremes of FGM and that it does lead to stereotyping of communities. However it seems a massive stretch to equate Labiaplasty with the worst categories of FGM. |  | | |
