| VAR’s a load of bollox part 9,121,964,019 22:50 - Dec 20 with 572 views | Swansea_Blue | Just watching MOTD. Garnacho over the ball, studs high at calf level, no response from officials. For Spurs, Simmons goes studs high on van Dijk’s calf, VAR intervenes, straight red. The standard and inconsistency of officiating is appalling. No wonder the players get wound up and then end up getting frustrated and picking up more cards. | |

| VAR’s a load of bollox part 9,121,964,019 on 23:12 - Dec 20 with 515 views | Garv | In my opinion you're making the classic criticism of officials in the name of consistency, despite it being two different tackles by two different players, in different games, from different angles with differing impact and force. And they're decisions made by different people. Officials are not robots. For what it's worth I don't think Simons should see red for that. It's clumsy but not dirty, in my opinion. But to me it looked a lot less like an honest attempt for the ball than Garnacho's, and with more sustained contact, and from behind. I hate the consistency argument. It doesn't exist, nor should it realistically.. [Post edited 21 Dec 0:13]

You don’t want consistency? Er, ok. I can’t think of a response to that. Garnacho’s was a classic ‘leg-breaker’ on someone who had their foot planted. It was a far more dangerous tackle imo.

But isn't the whole point of VAR to try to introduce consistency across all games? Not something that I believe is achievable hence why I think VAR is pointless (consistency by the match officials in the match they are currently offciating is all I ever want)..

Well maybe, but you will never get consistency so whatever the intended purpose of VAR is, it's largely irrelevant. Football isn't consistent, players generally aren't consistent because they're human. Officials are the same. You can refer decisions to VAR all you want, all you're doing is asking another human to offer their judgement on the situation. It's mostly still down to opinion, unless it's something genuinely blatant like the Everton handball this evening. [Post edited 20 Dec 23:55]

100% agree, people asking for the impossible.

Also, don't get me going on offside flags being raised well after the player who was offside has played the ball.

The last line is slightly in jest, but what I mean is there's no valid reason that there should be consistency, because it's not possible for the most part.
