McKenna: Decision on Loanee Chaplin Part of Squad Assessment After Sunday 2nd Jan 2026 12:00
Boss Kieran McKenna says decisions on whether to recall loan players such as Conor Chaplin, who has spent the first half of the season with his hometown side Portsmouth, the Blues’ opposition on Sunday, will be made when the squad as a whole is assessed after the weekend, the January transfer window having opened yesterday. 12

I'd be thrilled to see him return, however I'd been told previously his return home was due to personal matters, which led me to believe a return to Ipswich wasn't on the cards!

The memories of Chappers are wonderful, as it stands he's not been great for over a season and can't see him getting in the team at 10. In fact having him back might limit Egeli's chances of moving inside.

Let's enjoy the memories.

If he does return and it works out then obviously that would be superb, my worry is it wouldn't work out.

Very harsh, he's one who's season last year was disrupted by injury and that never let us down when he did play- he just never got going.

I think if you slotted Chappers into this squad he'd comfortably get you at least 8-12 goals before the end of the season.

Then why was he allowed to leave on loan in the first place? He's played for us at the start of the season (mostly off the bench though.

8-12 goals is a goal every 2 or 3 matches and equal with the top scorer in the league over the first half of the seasons games.

Just think he's going to be 2nd or 3rd choice for that 10 role at the moment and that's assuming Egeli doesn't get a run there.

Would be amazing if you were right, I just can't see it happening.

As I say, as I understood it, it was due to personal reasons- although unsure how reliable that information is, if a potential return is being mooted.

I think anything this season pre-transfer window closing needs to be treated as part of an extended pre-season.

As I see it, only Nunez is a real option there atm, Sammy Szmodics would always be my number one choice, but he's struggled for fitness.
I've not idea why we've been playing Akpom there, it's clearly not a his position-
Egeli would be better suited to a number ten role, but it appears that similar to when Omari first joined, this part of Sindre's footballing education he has been placed in a wide role to somewhat protect him.

Amazing how people see things differently.

I wouldn't have SS anywhere near the 10, I don't think he suits our game and I don't think he can't link up the play how we need.

Different jobs require different tools- there will be games where that kind of sewing between midfield and attack is needed and Nunez would be much better suited to that! (that being said, despite him doing the role admirably, I don't believe Nunez should be playing 10, he's a deep lying playmaker IMO)

Szmodic's goal threat can't be overlooked and while i'd prefer to have him in that nominal left free role, as he was in our premier league season, Philogene and Clarke have that locked down, so in the ten as a second/shadow striker would be best option IMO.
