Paris 20:23 - Jan 12 with 942 views

PSG v Paris FC tonight. I looked up Paris FC on Wiki, and I do vaguely remember the name Racing Club de Paris, but does anyone here know the difference between what has come to be known as the ‘fan bases’? It doesn’t seem to be geographical.

( What I took from Wikipedia was how late top-flight football came to Paris, though I did know how much the French really did/do love rugby.

PSG are a relatively young club .. seventies I think … there was or is a red star Paris I think too that have been around a while .. this “new” Paris I think have also got big money behind them too ?
Rugby has always been a southern France thing although Paris is of course big enough to carry off a following.

Yeah, Paris is a bit weird for rivalries. Back in the 70s and 80s, PSG’s main local rival was Racing Club de France — they were the old, upper-class club, while PSG was the new, popular team. When Racing fell down the leagues, that rivalry pretty much disappeared.

Red Star is another historic rival, but more because of culture and identity than geography — working-class, left-wing, anti-establishment, that kind of thing.

Paris FC are the closest geographically, but they’ve mostly been outside the top division, so there’s never really been a big fan rivalry - until recently, but it's still quite contrived and manufactured. Basically, in Paris it’s always been more about identity and class than actual postcode, which is also why Marseille, and to an extent St Etienne ended up being PSG’s rivals.
