Rather disturbing item on the World Service this morning about someone who regained consciousness in an Iranian morgue and played dead for three days because he feared he would be killed.

He was discovered by relatives in the morgue who managed to get him out, the suggestion being that they bribed officials.

Evil sods aren’t they? (I realise that’s not news to anyone!). Those resisting and protesting must have balls of steel.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Interesting to see the US now turning its attention to Cuba.

Cuba, Venezuela and Iran have long been top of bogey list when it comes to US. In contrast, Russia and China appear to have dropped off that list.

But from what I have seen so far, the US seems more interested in using its power to severely weaken these regimes, and gain economic or military advantage, than it is in the plight of the people.

And clearly there appears to be an element of taking attention off Trump's domestic woes.

“the US seems more interested in using its power to severely weaken these regimes, and gain economic or military advantage”

I agree the sentiment, but I’m not sure if it’s more opportunistic than strategic. They have a stranglehold on Cuba’s oil supply now which they can leverage. That said with Cuba or Venezuela there’s very little wider military or economic benefit to the US so you wonder whether it’s as simple as taking down some long term adversaries.

They are still weighing up strikes on Iran, and moving more military assets to the region but the consensus is the Iranian regime can’t be toppled by air strikes alone. It’s horrific the level of violence that the Iranian regime resorted to, the death toll appears to be even worse than first thought. You’d think that there can’t be much support left for them domestically- even with control over media, you can’t hide so many people not returning home.

"so you wonder whether it’s as simple as taking down some long term adversaries."

I can't say I disagree with that.

Being the president to finally topple the Cuban government would be a massive boost to Trump's ego, and probably now an easy win given that their financial allies have all but disappeared.
