Feeling nostalgic - Town vs Sheff Utd 12:18 - Jan 23 with 624 viewsnrb1985

Having hit 40 last year (41 in two months!), I’ve found myself getting very nostalgic — and occasionally melancholy — about certain things. One of them, as I’m sure it is for many of us, is going to the football with your Dad as a kid.

For me, perhaps even more so than Norwich, Town vs Sheff U is the fixture. For whatever reason, those games always seemed to have something riding on them and often turned out to be proper humdingers.

The first time I ever cried at football was that playoff “loss”. The best game I’ve ever seen, to this day, was the 3–2 home win under Royle. Bent and Ambrose — what a pairing, what a day. I still remember jumping on my old man (who, thankfully, is still with us) and going absolutely nuts when Bent’s header went in.

Then there was one of my favourite away days ever — the 1–1 draw when Westlake scored. I was at Uni nearby at the time. Not the greatest result, but springtime, under the lights on a Friday night, on the beers all day (when I could hold my drink!) with Suffolk mates coming up for the day etc.

It’s just a proper proper fixture. One that almost goes beyond football for me because of those really evocative memories as a child from the 90s and noughties. Not sure if I'm articulating this very well or it makes much sense - but it's just been a great rivalry that's meant a lot down the years.

COYFB. Massive day tomorrow — enjoy it all those going!

My first away game was Sheffield United away, 1996 I think. Taricco faked a headbutt, got their bloke sent off and we won 2-1

Dane Whitehouse if I'm not mistaken?

That was probably the start of the rivalry I guess as we had them in the POs that season.

Still think about that Sedgeley free kick periodically!

Of course hebdid. Rinse and repeat for the next couple of games vs Scum of the North.

Mauricio was quite open about his feelings towards Sheff Utd, saying "They don't like me, and I don't like them".

What a player he was for us.

He would be in my top three best Town players for sure.

In no particular order:

Dyer
Holland
Taricco

The 3–2 home win under Royle was one of the first games I attended, and it's what got me hooked on ITFC. Was made all the better that I was sat in the south lower very close to the away supporters, and there was even two massive blokes in our section who were celebrating every Sheff U goal. I don't remember a sweeter turning of the tables than that day.

Turns out not every game is like that, but hey-ho.

We're a similar age and totally hear you.

First trip up there was the Stockwell play off game and had a cracking day for that Friday night game.

Also remember beating them 4-1 (?) at home on the last game of the season when we were going for the top 2 under Burley.

Really looking forward to the day out tomorrow. Like them or not, proper club in a very good city.

We had some cracking battles with the Warnock sides. I always remember that freekick Jimmy Juan scored against them in 2006.

That was the game when Warnock tried to wind up the North Stand after the game and Richard Naylor almost flattened him.

Recall taking 5k there for the playoff game and thinking how dangerously steep the upper tier was. Kevin Beattie was sitting a few rows behind us. Also remember a friend of a friend taking his glass eye out and rinsing it off in his beer.

The 3-2 Dale Roberts tribute game… wow. That was sensational stuff.

Yep, Scum of the North.

Looking back there are various fleeting rivalries, usually connected to challenging for promotion together. Bolton of course, but I was reminded as we cruised to victory against Blackburn how big the rivalry with them was for a couple of seasons. Both going after promotion and then both did well to start with the following year in the Premier League. If I recall both seasons the home games were around Christmas and both felt massive.
