To get to 88-90 points 23:24 - Jan 31 with 573 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

With 17 games to go….

2.1 - 2.3 PPG required.

Looking at the fixture list we basically need to be flawless at home IMO and beat Boro/Hull.

The maximum points we could get now is what Leeds and Burnley got last year but I don’t think we are winning 17 straight!

Pompey is almost approaching must win territory after today with Derby and Wrexham on deck, we’ve made a bit of a meal of things really. There wasn’t a tone of room for error after our start to the season. I don’t think we can’t drop below 2PPG now and make automatics. Feels like we are going to need a 5 or so game win streak in there somewhere.

I think 90 guarantees automatic promotion the floor would probably be 85, which is right at 2 PPG.

In other words we can’t afford many repeats of today, if any.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

I feel and have for a while that this team is one of those teams that has the door open for them and they never manage to walk through it.

Hope I’m wrong but just don’t get that feel with this team, I reckon we will end up with 79 points, I don’t see us going to the mid eighties.

Is funny how a week changes everything but after last weeks result, we really needed to win today. Hull might be at the peak of their powers, I think I trust Boro to stay the course at the moment. Cov can’t keep on this awful run, or maybe they can.

The door has been open all season really, for second place, it’s now open for both but the last two games, the performances have been a bit worrying as well.

When you lay it all out, it does illustrate why we can’t afford these type of results at home as a chasing side, no more in isolation games, we will be fairly close to the run in come March.

Fair assessment.

I do think one thing being overlooked though is that for many of the disappointing results like today, we’re also capable of a surprise result. Like Coventry away. I’d have taken a point there. Having won, today balances that out.

I see more of these opportunities in the coming games. Derby, Wrexham, Stoke, Watford, Southampton are all likely to come at us. We can turn any of these games into a win, because they need/want to win, and that will suit us.

For promotion between now and the end of the season, beating the clubs around us is what will likely define where we finish.

I actually think the next week is crucial, autos could be over this time next week.

Yes.

We’ve beat two of the top four on the road and if Hirst scored the crucial penalty at Boro it might have been all of them. So I agree, it’s not that we can’t beat anyone but we haven’t beaten everyone we should either. I just think people need to realize the room for error is really small as well.

Even if say Hull and Cov fell off majorly, there would likely then be a threat from below us if we didn’t achieve 2PPG or above.

Agree - the margin for error is very little. There are a fair number of teams in the chase, especially since both Coventry & Middlesborough have stuttered. This is equally why it is crazy that some have already given up on auto promotion (not aimed at you Joey)

If we get under 3 points, we will be in a pretty bad spot no doubt.

Crazy that 86 or soemthing might do it when 98 wasn’t enough last year, doesn’t feel like we can really afford to blow this opportunity.
