Clearly not like-for-like positions but if Hirst or Azon gets injured, then Akpom becomes backup for the 9 and Szmodics is still a more than worthwhile option at 10.
And without sounding pessimistic, no new striker does make reaching the top two a little more doubtful. I’m not sure strengthening a potential playoff rival for the sake of £6m which we can’t spend makes a great deal of sense to me.

I don't really see the two as linked to be honest. Szmodics will not be used as a striker here. Equally, he hasn't proven himself able to contribute significant goals in our system from the 10 (albeit a lot of that may be down to long stretches on the sidelines). He will never be worth more than he is now so we should sell. | | | |

I'd sell him regardless, I don't think the 2 are necessarily linked.
I would double down on giving Akpom a run at #9 now though if we don't get anyone through the door. Hopefully we can get a tune out of him there as I do think he's the one most likely to go on a clinical run of goalscoring out of our options. |  | | |

One thing I like about Szmodics is his physicality, which is rather lacking in the vast majority of our attacking players, and which I felt we missed after Christmas last season.
He also did very well the other week when he came on in the No.10 role.
Unless we are desperate to get our money back or to stop paying his wages, it would seem madness to get rid of him if it leaves a place in the squad. |  | | |

I did too, he looked sharp and he's neat in possession. Ultimately we've spent a lot on him, he has a good record at this level, and we've only really used him in the 10 thus far. In his rare (maybe 1 and only) league start in the 9 he did score against Oxford, and it was the sort of finish I don't think our other options tuck away.
Mehmeti or Nunez rotating in the 10, Philogene and Clarke left, Burns and McAteer right. Akpom at 9 with Hirst and Azon backing up. Feels to me like that's the best blend, but I'm just a layman and in McKenna I trust. | | | |
