Pimball Wizard aka Martin Czech by
Pendejo 30 Dec 2025 21:48I have just been advised by Met Police that our fellow town fan, Martin Czech aka Pimball Wizard was discovered deceased after I had asked for a Welfare Check to be carried out. The coroner to determine cause of death.
For many of our "Glory Years" 2010 - 2020 Martin was a season ticket holder home (Block Y, in what will always be The Pioneer Stand to me) & away.
He continued to be a ST holder to the end of 24/25 season, however, increasingly poor ill health meant he could no longer handle the travel from Staines, Surrey to PR.
He had something which affected his balance that would make him appear drunk when all he'd drunk was water, though for many years we used to joke about who was going to be his carer as he liked a good drink, think Spoons breakfast washed down with 1664.
I first met him after posting on here offering a lift to FA Cup game at Southampton in 2010 when he'd just retired from BA and over the years travelled all over the EFL with him & the odd European friendly often doing weekenders for long haul away games (Swansea, Blackpool (more than once), Newcastle & Sunderland to name a few)
He was one of the attendees at Kempies funeral being a fellow in RATS - Regular Away Town Supporter
Our 23/24 season saw me use his ST multiple times, to the extent that I almost missed out on Huddersfield because I didn't have the purchases thru my membership (even though he had to declare it when transferring the ticket & paying the extra fee).
Not sure how many games he attended last season as the moving of the press box made getting to his seat more difficult & his ill health certainly got in the way.
Funny thing is, he wasn't a born Ipswich fan, he was Chelsea growing up in Hillingdon, Middlesex (or West London as it's called these days), his parents retired to Hadleigh & when visiting them at weekends would go to PR to take the monotony out of the visits and replacing it with the slow decay that was Marcus Evans' tenure, then not being well enough to truly enjoy the back to back seasons.
He was also a big fan of Derek & Clive, rock music (fav radio station Planet Rock) and stamp collecting. Oh & that surname, bit Eastern European, yep his father escaped Poland and the Nazis, working for RAF during WWII.
I would say raise a glass to him, but it appears alcoholism may have been part of his end.
I work one day a week close to where he lives and would regularly visit him, but as he dived deeper into alcohol he'd ask (sorry, tell) me not to visit.
I've already WhatsApp messaged many that knew him, but there are friends of his out there who are not in my contacts & hey this is a cathartic exercise.
