Wrexham in the league 10:39 - Feb 14 with 503 viewsOldFart71

Do we have to win the league fixture against Wrexham to justify the selections and the way we played last night in the FA Cup ?
If we were to lose the league match what would that say about us basically throwing away the chance of a big pay day in the next round of the FA Cup ?
Of course I want to see us promoted.
Do I think we are good enough. To get promoted yes, to stay in the Prem no. Not without substantial investment with a half a dozen players incoming.
Fingers crossed last night was the right way to go.

Every promoted team has to sign a lot of players, it's hardly a failing that we'd be in the same position. There's really no such thing as a big pay day in the FA Cup for a club our size. It's a drop in the ocean compared to parachute payments and Prem TV money and promotion has to be our main aim.

And we don't need to win next week to justify our selection. We need to win next week to boost our chances of promotion. A draw isn't an absolute disaster, on paper it's one of our tougher remaining fixtures, but a win would be a big plus.

My opinion of last nights game is that even though we dropped a lot of our best players we still looked a class above Wrexham. They aren't a push over and early doors we played them off the park. Should have had a couple of goals through Hirst and Akpom.
Then they had a large part of the middle of the game and we came on stronger at the end and were a toenail away from Clarke equalising.
Despite all the money flying around via parachute payments, shirt sales ect. We have a lot of players surplus to requirements. Some of the costs will be offset by them being on loan.
But we still need to be mindful that should we not get into the Premier League then next season the parachute payment reduces somewhat and beyond that the payment is very little.
As long as our best side is available I have no doubts we will win at Wrexham.
Why the players of today can't play two or three 90 minute games somewhat confuses me as a majority of pitches are much better than when we had a smaller squad who played in most matches. It could of course be argued that season 80-81 if we had had a slightly bigger squad we would have won the league.

The Payday is significantly bigger if we go up, even if we come back down, it's infinitely more lucrative than a 5th round tie against Man City.
