Who would play Lovejoy now? David Dickinson? - yuck! Ian Marshall? Tinker? Maybe David Mitchell if he went a bit method and developed a healthy gin addiction for six months before filming? Charlie Gimbert could be Thomas Müller - no brainer.

Then you could have Jennifer Saunders as Lovejoy and Miriam Margoyles as Tinker. Tell me you wouldn't watch that! Your suggestion of David Mitchell may have been subconsciously influenced by his character Ginger in Sir Digby Chicken Caesar sketches:

That, my friend, is a brilliant idea. Benedict Cumberbatch as Lady Jane?

That's not something I ever picked up as a member of the Labour Party at the time it was produced. To me it was just great Sunday night drama, and a bit of light relief for the working week ahead. [Post edited 5 Mar 9:04]

It’s literally about a self made man buying and selling antiques from and to the bourgeoisie in Georgian piles in the bucolic English countryside.

It was based on a series of books, the first of which was written in 1977 well before Mrs Thatcher. I suppose it could be argued that British drama tends to cover either the upper classes or the lower classes, so to a focus on the bourgeoisie is no bad thing. And I have no issues with series like Brideshead Revisited even thought they represent a privileged class that I wouldn't necessarily approve of in terms of equality or equality of opportunity. At the end of the day it is all drama, and with certain exceptions isn't written for any political reasons. [Post edited 5 Mar 9:45]

Feck me Chico! Is nothing sacred? You can't just dis the Joy man. What's next? A harsh critique of The Darling Buds of May? A slanderous put down of the Antiques Road Show?

Lovejoy is Thatcherism with antiques: a lovable self-employed hustler thriving through cheek, charm and the free market. All drama has politics baked in and the most effective propaganda is the kind people think is apolitical.

I know I know, I’m sorry. I didn’t build my brain. I like Lovejoy! But it’s very Tory.

Now you mention it, I think possibly we all knew at the back of our minds it was a bit Tory. But because it was such good tv and obviously located in the most beautiful part of the world we were all trying to ignore it and obviously nobody was supposed to mention it out loud..

I think in general in the books, the main character is less of a lovable rogue and more of a git. The only Lovejoy book I've actually read is one of the few not set in East Anglia. It's called The Vatican Rip and is unsurprisingly set in Rome. My late grandmother gave me her copy signed by the author, who she knew through the Essex/Suffolk am dram scene. This is starting to get a bit BlueGnu isn't it?

I don't recall Lovejoy being part of my Western Marxism MA at Essex University. https://www.essex.ac.uk/course

The Darling Buds of May? A depiction of a past agrarian utopia that never was. Right up Reform's street as they hanker for "the good old days" with an added touch of "Blood and Soil" to boot. The Antiques Roadshow? The ultimate "greed is good" show. Valuation estimates are given and the stock reply elicited, "Oh no we wouldn't consider selling it." whilst they are trying to remember the name of their local autioneer. Middle class disingenuity. Give me the more honest, if no less acquisitive,"Flog It" any day.

On the other paw, it's a fella striving on a local level to rip off the rich and often to help out the needy too. Not particularly Tory in my rose-tinted view, but I do take your point to some extent.

Did your small die cast version tend to get bigger when Daisy appeared?
