Far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has threatened to turn the southern suburbs of Lebanon’s capital into another Gaza Strip, as the Israeli military ordered hundreds of thousands of people to immediately leave their homes in Beirut. In a video shared online on Thursday, Smotrich warned that the Dahiyeh area would soon look “like Khan Younis”, a city in southern Gaza that has been decimated in Israel’s genocidal war against Palestinians in the enclave. “The southern suburbs will become like Khan Younis,” the Israeli minister said.

| Coming to Beirut tonight.... on 19:33 - Mar 5 with 712 views | gtsb1966 | When Israel was attacked in 2023 i understood their initial reaction and that they had to go after Hamas but like most people I think they went way way too far. This now is an Israeli government, with Trumps permission and arms, hell bent on crushing anybody and anything in its way without any regard for innocent people. I hate Trump and Netanyahu with equal measure. | | | |

And with each bomb dropped, Israel will have sown the seed for thousands of innocent people to grow to despise the country and wanting to extract some sort of revenge.

Exactly - and to a state that’s not even hostile to Israel - the Lebanese army withdrew from areas where Hezbollah were/are active in attacking Israel, literally no reason to attack Beirut.
| Coming to Beirut tonight.... on 20:01 - Mar 5 with 512 views | DJR | This is particularly shocking. "Hundreds of thousands of people in southern Lebanon told to flee by Israeli military The Israeli military has issued an evacuation order for all of the southern suburbs of Beirut, in an area called the Dahiyeh which it says is a Hezbollah stronghold. There’s no definitive figure on how big the population is here but some estimates put it between 300,000 to 700,000. It is believed to be the first time the Israeli military has ordered large swathes of the Lebanese capital to flee, when before they would force people out of specific buildings that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would then strike. The IDF’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, said the latest order covers four major neighbourhoods in the southern suburbs of Beirut – Bourj el-Barajneh, Hadath, Haret Hreik and Shiyyah. “Save your lives and evacuate your homes immediately,” he said in a message posted on social media. “Beware, heading south is prohibited. Any southward movement could endanger your lives." [Post edited 5 Mar 20:02]

Altho the southern part of Beirut does contain powerbases for both Hamas and Hezbollah. That was where the Palestinian refugee camps were (e.g. Shatila). That's no excuse for bombarding civilian areas, tho. And Smotrich is a nasty piece of work.

That’s certainly one regime that needs to be changed. History is going to judge those countries standing with Netanyahu’s regime very badly indeed.

It's always been massively asymmetrical, and when that's the case the 'big' or 'rich' or 'modern' power bears extra responsibility even if it is responding to an atrocity like October 2023. It should never have been a massive, murderous assault on a civilian-dense area, it should have been targeted strikes and raids (enough to satisfy the revenge emotion if that was necessary) and then Israeli investment in containment / defensive / buffer zone systems around the relatively tiny Gaza Strip. As well as starting to give back the settlements and trying to act like cooperative neighbours. But no, the murderous bastards had to go and set the whole fkn world on fire.
