As we get closer to the proper business end of the season

Fast, get the ball down the throats of the opposition with less thoughts on what goes on behind the midfield...

you score 2 we will score 3 mindset

Not saying that's what I think we should do as what we've been doing is pretty much ok, but I just wonder if that tightness at the back (ignore wrexham) might be released a bit as the season draws to towards the end

“Another two away games back-to-back, another midweek game, it just has to be full throttle to them and then maybe the early part of next week we’ll get a chance to lay out some real plans for how to use the international break and how we’ll try and taper and peak coming into that last three and a half weeks of games.”

Gave me the feeling that the shackles may be released somewhat for the run-in and that everyone should be primed for it (based on the prior paragraph about rotation earlier in the season).

We haven't been getting the space to do that to opponents much this season. Teams refuse to be drawn into a high press, looking to sit back, stifle and catch us on the break from clearances when every Town outfield player is well up the pitch.

Fast passing doesn't work when there's a solid hedge of defenders in front. There is a high chance of interception (which does happen, often). Players attempting to drive forward with the ball are quickly crowded, sealed off and dispossessed (which is why Clarke has been less effective latterly).

We don't actually need to weaken our defence to be more aggressive at the other end. We're a lot stronger defensively at RB than in 2023, Matusiwa does his thing and the CB pairings are very effective (bar the odd occasion). Those are not the players who would be going gung ho up the pitch anyway.

The issue is less excessive defensiveness than difficulty in finding the freedom to apply our flair in attack.

But we have however started seeing azor much closer to the opposition box. Agree about sides sitting but I do wonder if we will throw more men forward leaving just the backline to look after itself.

Risky but if done correctly it could reap its rewards.

Think it's unlikely. I believe the change to a more controlled, and some would also say a slower style of play has been instigated with promotion to the PL in mind. I think we and KM learned a few lessons last season. Exciting? not often, but pragmatic for sure.

I think Matusiwa has already got licence to drive forward when he can. Indeed, we've seen O'Shea do it once or twice, too. The issue is what happens when we get into the final third, how we do the last bit to get around, over, or through the concentrated defence.

I suspect that’s wishful thinking Frimmers. Even if that’s what he wants, the chemistry and blend of types of players is’t quite there to deliver it. I’m not saying we’re bad, but we’re very different to 23/24. Better in some ways, more controlled and defensively solid. But lacking the ability to pull off ‘wow’ moves going forward.

I think it’s highly unlikely that Kmc will change things at this stage. Why would he?
We’ve got ourselves challenging the Top Two playing the way we do, it’s reaping enough rewards. If we were languishing in 10th / 11th, with ground to make up then yes, I could understand a more “gung ho” approach. We’re not in that situation.
