Where does hair pulling rank in terms of severity? I bet it’s not specifically mentioned in the Laws of the Game, yet apparently it’s classed as violent conduct. Feck knows. It’s not something I ever came across on a football field. Last time I saw any was probably in a girls cat fight at school.

Agree. Under the law of the game it’s violent conduct. That’s a three game ban.

Confession time. I did it once, many years ago and before video evidence was a thing. I was playing the last game for my home club before leaving for Uni. The assistant manager burst into the changing room before the game and said "fken hell they've got a girl playing for them!" I saw him in the warm up. About 5' tall with long blonde flowing locks that came down to his arse. Looked like Paul Walsh (remember him?) Then when we lined up for the kick off, I realised that he was my immediate opponent (I was left midfield, he was right midfield, in the days when everybody played 442). Great I thought, I'm going to win the physical battle easily, which was a rarity for a teenager playing in mens football. The game started and I quickly realised that although I was taller and stronger, I certainly wasn't quicker. Fkin hell, he was as quick as Paul Walsh! This was something that I wasn't used to because what I lacked in strength, I generally made up for in speed (I was the quickest in my team and had pretty good stamina at the time). Walshie gave me the runaround for the first 20 minutes or so, then I had my chance. For once I found myself close to him when the ball was cleared up the other end. Great, nobody's looking. It wasn't pre-planned or anything like that, but I saw that golden hair and the temptation was simply too great. A swift tug that a bellringer would have been proud of and Walshie squealed like a stuck pig. I got away with it as I sprinted to join the attack (and for the first time found myself free of my opponent). I did regret it somewhat, because I wasn't really a dirty player. Did the trick mind you, Walshie stayed his distance for the rest of the match until he was subbed midway through the second half.

You'd have thought turning around and pushing a rival player to the ground was the greater misdemeanor. Obviously not! I remember a story I heard some years ago involving Kevin Beattie and Alan Hunter and it was probably a match I attended. We were playing Leeds and a still youthful Kevin Beattie was on the ground. Apparently the Leeds striker Alan Clarke went to " help " him to his feet by pulling him up by the hair. Unfortunately for AC " Big Al " saw it, came over to him and said " If you do anything like that again, I'll see you outside after the match "! Nobody messed with " Big Al ".

great story I remember Paul Walsh and his luscious locks lol. He was a piss head if I remember rightly - back when diet and looking after yourself wasn’t much of a thing.

I think I subconsciously associated my opponent with him because at the time, one of my schoolmates had recently broken into the first team squad at Luton, where Walshie was the star striker. Apparently Walshie chatted a lot. I don't recall my mate saying anything about his drinking habits. He did look like him though. Oh, and Steve Foster (Luton captain at the time) used to get his hair freshly permed immediately before any photoshoot. Which used to rile the manager, David Pleat.
