My only gripe from yesterday 08:26 - Mar 22 with 831 viewsTinglyTed

First half we played really well and had the better of them.

Millwall stepped it up in the second half and a point a piece I think was a fair result although Millwall could have got all 3 and I don’t think we could have had many complaints.

My issue is why did we continue to play out from the back when they had two up top? The pressure we put ourselves under was silly and could have cost us against a top two rival.

It’s great we have a philosophy but if we want to get into the top two and then survive in the Premier League next year, we’ve got to box more clever.

We did go long much more than we normally do. KM was literally signalling it at goal kicks. It largely resulted in them getting it back.

It worked whilst Azon was on the pitch. He won most duals and linked well. Unfortunately that is not George’s game. He needs it in behind in the channel to chase, and that’s when Millwall had the best spells. Not blaming Hirsty, it was just a case of the tactic we had to play due to their two up second half which didn’t suit us once Azon was off the pitch.

Really enjoyed yesterday. Proper game, two good teams, and a great atmosphere.

Amazing how, at 6ft 4in George Hirst, our centre forward, is basically expected and it is accepted that he will barely challenge for, let alone win his fair share of aerial duels with opposing centre backs. Sometimes his attempts are merely a token gesture.

Not always easy for a goalie or defender to go long with an opposition player right in their faces. To get decent distance, the ball needs to be put out in front and a run-up taken. Which gives an opportunity, while it's out of close control, for an attacker to nip in and rob them.

If your passing is accurate - which it mostly was - safer to get the ball to O'Shea moving forward or Matusiwa on the turn.

Different, obviously, with the protection afforded to a goal kick and we did go long a lot more often with those.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Not every tall player is good in the air. Especially as Championship CBs ase rarely much shorter than that themselves (and yesterday were towering over even him).

It might sound a bit primitive, but I would have got Walton to kick deep into the corner (like in Rugby).

First half, Millwall gave up so much possession in their own half as we boxed them in. This would have relieved some territorial pressure and maybe helped us play a lot more in their half.

Hirst was always standing to the right of Cooper (from Waltons) view, and for some reason Walton would aim his kicks to the left, so Cooper was always getting to the ball first. He should've been drilling the long passes lower and directly at Hirst, so he could at least challenge for it.

Poll: What will be announced first?

I take Hirst being mediocre in the air but he is simply poor.

I thought playing it out from the back in the second half worked pretty well. We had loads of space to exploit when we found a way through and seemed to create a number of extremely promising 3v3 and 4v4 situations. It was the final balls that were the let down.

And I'm afraid add around another 10 genuine PL quality players to the squad.
