Wasn't it pretty much the same for the game they played against Cov and got pumped 7-0 earlier in the season? If so, I guess it's the football gods evening things out.

I am sure we hardly ever test the keeper enough for all the chances we have. Most games we seem to score 1 or 2 and maybe have one more save but our keeper ends up making 3 or 4 a game.

We're third in the league for shots on target per game, close behind Coventry and Saints: https://www.fotmob.com/en-GB/l

You would be wrong, https://playerstats.football/c Another interesting state. I have long thought our back four back off too often, instead of getting a tackle. https://playerstats.football/c

Whilst I agree about lack of engagement, I assume the amount of possession we tend to have will play a part in the figures too.

That's true. Which is why I find it pretty interesting and surprising that Boro are so high up the 'tackles' league table. Not so much a possession side, but Millwall are also a notable name in the top few for tackles, given their lofty league position. It shows that they have a very effective defence (rather than just the team with the fewest goals being referred to by commentators as having the meanest defence in the league). They clearly have to practise some pretty dark (and blatant) arts to achieve what they do achieve, but they seem to get away with it. These tackles though I imagine are in a different category than the shirt pulling and grappling. No idea whether only lawful tackles count, but clearly they're getting in a lot of tackles that are considered lawful. I don't have too much of a problem with our defensive performance this year. We concede a lot of goals per tackle made, but I don't see that as a sign we're not tackling enough. I think it's, as you say, partly possession. Also, anecdotally speaking, we do seem to get hit on the break and suffer a sucker punch goal more than many. But I think that may be a symptom of just not being able to break teams down and eventually losing the ball. If we were more clinical in front of goal, that problem may be slightly mitigated. Attack is the best form of defence, as they say, but only when the attack is successful or the ball is retained.
