It is a bit isn’t it. Aren’t all South American countries former colonies? The US and Canada are relatively new countries as well. So maybe that timing together with the geography could have something to do with it. At a guess anyway.


Unrestricted birthright citizenship existed in the UK until it was abolished in 1983 by the British Nationality Act 1981.

It has similarly been restricted in much of Europe in recent decades.

Wikipedia gives this explanation for the position of the Americas.

Does his proposal mean that both parents have to be US citizens? I thought it was just one, as it is here.
