Tried to go to Southend v Braintree earlier - get there only to discover it's all-ticket - 9k tickets and sold out.

Drive home and the sirens are non stop = plod going full pelt towards Southend.

Get home - check the news (fearing there had been an incident) and stumble on this...

Haven't liked Colchester for many years now, nothing to do with local rivalry as they're not a rival and I'm not local. Anyhow in about 1989 or whatever year Colchester we're due to get relegated into the Conference a group of about 10 of us all supported different clubs went to see them play just up the train track in Peterborough.

We were about 14/15 at the time and to this day I've never witnessed as much racial abuse as was hurled at.the 3 black Peterborough players that day, in the end we left just into the second half and decided our time would be better spent drinking cheap lager and cider in the park behind the lido.

They were proper racist scumbags and I've never had any time for them since.

Getting harshly nicked whilst entering on our last ever visit to Layer Road didn't help improve my opinion either.

Mick Mills was manager, and Sammy Chung his assistant.

Colcheter's Barside could be very unpleasant. Had several Irish players that season, which probably toned down the 'No Surrender' chants somewhat, even though the IRA had planted a car bomb near Layer Road just a few months previously, taking both legs off a soldier. As I remember (and unusually,) Colchester had no black players at all that year, so it was 'back to basics' when it came to racism. Sickening stuff, and horrible times.

This was in the away end of London Road Peterborough. I vividly remember one of the worst c@nts had a beard which was relatively unusual for the time.

Never fully trusted any tw@t with a beard since, funny how things from your childhood stick with you. My apologies to anyone that has a massive beard but ever since I've associated it with racists, which is very unfair of me when they are generally just people too lazy to shave.
