It's soft but it's a wild kick towards the chest/face. Admittedly the official probably has to guess whether contact is actually made but it's an educated guess.

Would have to question why the referee should be overruled by a lino 30 yards away.

The ref wasn't. The lino didn't give it did he? Even if the lino had flagged, it would still be up to the ref to decide whether he had seen it more clearly and the lino had got it wrong and have a conversation with him before making the call.

The replay showed the ref take a long look at it before giving it. In the background the linesman never flagged at all.

What method did the linesman use to give it?
