Much is said about fixture congestion. KMcK is very keen to avoid it.
45 years ago in 1981 these weeks were busy for Town

4th April WBA League away (lost 3-1)
8th April Cologne UEFA Cup Semi home (won 1-0)
11th April Man C FA Cup Semi (lost 1-0)
14th April Villa League away (won 2-1) ( Villa won the league that year and Town doubled them and beat them in the FA Cup)
18th April Arsenal League home (lost 2-1)
20th April Norwich League away (lost 1-0)
22nd April Cologne UEFA Semi away (won 1-0)
25th April Man C League home (won 1-0)

All played with a 15 man first team squad.
That team and Bobby Robson were something else.

Did he also play games for England that season?

Two during the season and another at the end.

Yes 66 games 24 of which were cup games. Villa who won the title were not in UEFA Cup and went out of the FA Cup (to us) in the 3rd round.

That third round fa cup win against Villa at Portman Road almost certainly cost us the title. Inconceivable back then that a team wouldn’t give it their all in every competition. Beating them (1-0, Mariner, close range in front of the north stand, can still picture it) mattered. It was a big win at the time.

Poll: Most enjoyable calendar year as an Ipswich supporter

Villa played 46 games, 20 less than us.

And used only 14 players.

As it says on SBR, we finished outside the top six between 1974 and 1982 only once, and that was in 1978 when we won the FA Cup.

Over that period, I think only Liverpool were more consistent than us, and whilst squads were much smaller than today, I always felt that Liverpool's over that period was better than ours which meant they had better resources to call on when injuries and absences came along. With a better overall squad, I think we might well have one the First Division maybe more than once over that period.
