Andy Kershaw had his demons and served a short sentence for breaking a restraining order, but his commitment to championing new music, especially what was then known as "world music", cannot be faulted. I made me smile to read that in his last few weeks he stated "I am determined not to die before Benjamin Netanyahu, Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Ant and Dec. That should keep me going for a while." It's a shame he didn't get his wish! RIP Andy.
"I don't want to be like everyone else. That's why I'm a mod, see?"
Loved his travelogues and can never hear Suzanne Vega being mentioned without his accent and pronunciation in my head ever… didn’t know he was Ill .. I know he had his issues ( who doesn’t) but from my perspective another piece of my history gone.

My friend at Leeds who was on the Executive Committee with Kershaw said to me this afternoon that he was just a really nice person.

Probably one of the earliest people in the media with a really strong accent.
Another legend gone. Saw him DJing at a folk festival some years ago.
I saw his back when he was fishing in the Thames during a WOMAD many years ago, he was also responsible for disclosing a secret Wreckless Eric gig at The White Horse in Thelnitham on his Radio Three World music programme that I went to.
Also, maybe not the most appropriate epitaph but anyway '... Billy Bragg... describes how Andy Kershaw's inability to shut up led him to writing 'Levi Stubbs' Tears'.' https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/p

Here's a nice video of Billy Bragg and Andy Kershaw in Amsterdam.
I happened across this delightful but of course tinged with sadness creation.
Some of you will love and remember this with extreme fondness.. others won’t even know of the existence of the 2 of them… which is totally acceptable and understandable.. those that do know .. enjoy
Many years ago I spent some wonderful evenings listening to live music in the Beer Garden of the Queen's Hotel, Harare following his recommendation on his show
Admission was 50p, beers 10p a pop and the musicians were world class
John Chibadura and the Blacks Unlimited, Tembo Brothers and a couple of the Bhundu boys
