It’s not right but it’s ok 17:11 - Apr 25 with 968 viewsMullet

We’ll get promoted anyway.

Absolutely tropical down south today in the West Midlands, a proper club are West Brom and a decent stadium. The away end was brilliant in patches but nerves seemed to take hold on and off the pitch for Ipswich as both fans and players choked on promotion fatigue.

West Brom were physical, well drilled and happy to play through us at times. We are so well drilled that our shape makes us solid to the point of being brittle all too often too often this season. And while we looked good between both boxes, today felt like a 12 hour shift in one of Beszos’ misery hangars at times. We were slack rather than slick at both ends. Blazing and bobbling efforts past the frame of the goal all too often.

I nearly puked when Matusiwa did that weird flick thing in front of Walton, the keeper was superb today when we needed him, but he also didn’t shout man on to a lumbering Kipre who nearly got mugged when we needed to steal a chance instead.

Greaves is olden times language for shin pads but he and Clarke offered us little protection by drifting so far in, the baggies just played the out down the right all the time. The compact midfield seemed to leave us wondering where either CM was now and again, but once we were on the ball it was a different story. Whether we couldn’t see the gaps we were leaving or we couldn’t get the legs together to close them was debatable.

Azon is one good touch from looking like a genius, but the dumb luck of seeing the ball bounce off of him like a wall left people despairing all too often. He was lacking service more than luck I thought. Maybe we were just out of juice, the brutal scheduling draining us, because it felt like we had the quality but not the belief before and after the subs.

I’m assuming Kipre was offside, I’ve not seen it back yet but the whole of existence stopped as he got free and it looked like it be the Thetis moment for this generation. Mehmeti was another conundrum, he seemed to be in Darnell’s heat map again instead of playing off Kasey and Azon enough.

You could feel both sets of fans wondering if a point was enough as injury time came, the baggies probably the happier judging by the way the away end bounced back into a defiant set of chants about going up again.

Given there have been so many honking away performances this season, it was nice to feel they’re behind us. Instead of bouncing into the Premier league this week, we are fingernails into the precipice, hauling our heavy investments back into the top flight one game at a time.

And that’s ok. When Dara came back after media duties to salute us, the love in was genuine. Walking out in the sunshine and having an eye on two more games felt good.

May have been slightly desperate and even last-ditch at times, but the defence did its job again. Another clean sheet. Repeat that for the next two games and there's a very good chance we'll be home and dry in the automatics.

From the tellybox, Kipre was definitely in an offside position whan the shot came in.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I think Walton’s saves were the key there, especially in the second half. He made a peach of one. It’d be churlish to say we deserved 3 points as we didn’t, but it’s frustrating we aren’t well clear after the amount of games we’ve dropped points in.

You could feel the nerves ebb and flow with the game in a way you don’t get until this time of the season.

One of those matches that, had it gone on another ten minutes, we would very likely have won, such were West Brom running out of steam towards the end. But, unfortunately, we squandered the opportunities we did have just before the final whistle.

It was interesting that, from what I remember, Seb on BM said the West Brom didn't play a pressing game and were right at the bottom in pressing stats.

But they did though didn't they. Were right on us until they ran out of steam. I thought they were there for the taking towards the end of the match particularly after our subs.

I do think in that scenario it’s just as likely we might have lost! Neither team looked certain.

As my reply to Guffers that’s possible, but so is the opposite, we were completely gassed in some quarters and it’s really frustrating. I bet the heat was a factor too
