As I live in Kent, I may well take a trip to see his exhibition in Margate before it ends in June. EDIT: I forgot to say that I spent around 7 years sailing up and down the Deben with the sea scouts, and I've only seen Ramsholt and the Arms from the river. [Post edited 27 Apr 11:50]

Sorry to derail. Where's a good spot near the sea ? ( very blooming vague question ) As far as I know. Margate: arty but somewhat scabby Deal: nice but boring. Folkestone: OK. a bit arty and scabby. Dover: cheap and V scabby Brighton: London prices. That's all I know right now. Thanks.

Too annoying and expensive. By the time we'd paid for parking and had lunch I could have bought Tracey Emin's bed. Broadstairs

Hastings and Eastbourne are nice apart from the stony beaches, Hastings being that bit more hip than Eastbourne and cheaper than Brighton. Ramsgate has a nice sandy beach, as do Broadstairs and Camber Sands. But I would certainly say the Sussex/Kent coast isn't as good that that opposite it in Northern France, where sandy beaches prevail and there are some nice towns/seaside resorts. But narrow corridor ? Bexhill-on-Sea for the De La Warr Pavillion...

Whilst trendy (and expensive), I can't say I find it that appealing and what lets it down especially is the fact that it is on the tidal Thames | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Top marks for the Pavilion but apart from that exceedingly dull (it strikes me as the seaside equivalent of Shenfield) and once again a stony beach. [Post edited 27 Apr 15:16]

I'd have a few place to add your list in that case Hastings and Rye/Dungeness are both worth a visit.

Definitely the pavillion is worth a look but beyond that I'd agree not much there although there is a very good South American place to eat which I can heartily recommend.

Yep, it’s one of my favourite spots watching the sunset sat outside the Ramsholt Arms. It feels like home.

We were thinking of living. We stayed in Rye recently and it's very yummy mummy and a bit out of our bracket. Really lovely all the same. We have a tiny section of our garden modelled badly on Jarman's garden. [Post edited 27 Apr 19:20]

If you're thinking of living, Eastbourne is definitely an option. West of the pier the land rises to Beachy Head and Seven Sisters beyond. East of the pier is much flatter but has Sovereign Harbour, a marina development with a mix of flats and houses. Prices in Eastbourne tend to be fairly reasonable for the south east. My parents lived at Sovereign Harbour, having moved from Felixstowe, and loved it not least because it is easy to get to places like Brighton, Bexhill and Hastings. [Post edited 27 Apr 20:21]

Having lived in Eastbourne for nearly 15 years it is lovely town, the town centre itself is a bit 1960s concrete but the rest of the town is great. Plus it's got great access to the south coast and beautiful south downs.

If you’ve got a weekend I recommend foot passengering on the Dieppe ferry. Park at the Newhaven terminal and Dieppe centre is an easy walk. Hotels relatively cheap.

I also sailed up and down the Deben for many years with the Sea Scouts (though preferred canoes) AND also spent many, many hours in the Ramsholt Arms as a child.

IMV Folkestone is a lot more arty (and far nicer) than Margate. It also isn't all dominated by one celebrity artist. There's also a really nice cocktail bar, which I was in just a few days ago as it happens. I am currently writing an article about a new arts centre in Folkestone too. Ramsgate has a great number of artists too, though less public-facing art - whereas Margate has a couple of galleries and Folkestone has the Triennial and hundreds of artworks around the town. Brighton - despite being a gay I have never for the life of me understood why people like the place. It has hardly any culture, some really rough elements, it's not that pretty compared to other Victorian seaside resorts, and people there can be quite annoying about how special they think they are.

Brighton is basically London by Sea now any of the old grimy charm it had seems to have been lost You can still find a few decent places but not huge amounts. Some good if expensive food. Pub prices are obscene in places.
