Apparently Delap has as good as made it clear on socials? I haven't seen that. Anyhow, they are happy to see rid of him as they think he is a donkey. I am sure he will be linked with us, but he will go to Everton or Newcastle instead, surely?

When he left he was being talked about in some quarters as Kane’s obvious replacement in the future England set-up. Since the move he seems to have gone backwards. Not that many games/goals/assists for Chelsea. If we could have back the Delap that was here at the start of our Prem season then it’d be a thumbs up from me. However, the evidence of this season at Chelsea seems to be that either Prem defenders have worked out how to handle him or he isn’t learning how to nuance his game, or a bit of both. In which case it could be a bit of a gamble. Would be very happy to be proved wrong though. He’s quite a sight when in full-on rampaging mode.

| Liam Delap on 10:34 - May 6 by urbanpenguin | I think this may speak to his mentality. As noted before, he was fatlr better in the first half of last season than the second. I wonder if this is because it looked like Ipswich were less likely to stay up and so his drive, attention and mentality dropped. Similarly at Chelsea, as it looked more and more like he was not really wanted it used and on the outside of the core he's perhaps bothered and responded less. L McKenna likes players who can be on the outside but still stay turned on and ready, as a squad should, so they can pick up and progress. For the reason that perhaps Delap only sings when things are going well, I suspect McK may not return to him. |
I think most of the Town team became dispirited during the second half of that season, when after promising games against Chelsea (Delap's stand-out performance & one that helped him get his move) & Fulham, we lost 9 & drew 1 of the last 10. Playing lone striker in a struggling team isn't much fun & no wonder he became rather greedy. Hence, he may not fancy reprising this role & I think he's more likely to go to a mid ranking PL club like Everton (incidentally level with Chelsea in the table).

It's interesting reading people's takes on this. I can see both sides. I don't think I can really draw a conclusion as to his mentality. Ultimately Kieran will know, and will have more than an inkling as to whether he (Kieran) can get the most out of him with an arm round him or whatever man management technique might work. Too much talent to ignore if it's doable for sensible money, but the caveat of course is that Kieran will know what the lad is like, and we have to have a collective all pulling in the same direction.

The way they play makes it a tough position to succeed in but then maybe the same could be said for the way we have setup lately.

Does anyone know the thing he posted on his socials that alluded to him coming back they were on about yesterday?

I can see that suiting both parties tbh. Another good season with us will boost his sale value for Chelsea. It also minimises our risk if he doesn’t fire. I can see his wages putting off potential buyers

If we had had Delap this season instead of Azon/Hirst, we'd be above Coventry imho. People say he's just a battering ram. Not true, some of his goals last season were exquisite, showed aplomb as well as brute force. McKenna knows how to get the best from him, so I'd be very excited if it happens.

| Liam Delap on 19:38 - May 18 with 310 views | ITFC_Essex | I am still surprised that many think he will be a bad signing or player, given he now has two Premier League seasons under his belt, playing what 80 odd games, scoring a few and is only 23 years old. If he had never played here, people would be crowing over him potentially signing for Ipswich. In terms of the role McKenna had him play, for that first half of 2024/25 McKenna has never had a striker fulfil it as well as he did in that position. Hirst does okay in that role, Azon did the best he could but neither are as good as Delap is. | |
