| Do any of you lot remember the summer of 1976? 08:25 - Jun 24 with 4348 views | Keno | I recall it being hot, very hot, but I dont remember all the health warnings and alerts Classrooms at Northgate was like ovens, so bad they let us take our ties off. Most of the school holiday was spent bike riding for some reasons 6 of us cycled to Walton on the Naze one day 'cos it had a sandy beach', playing footie or p1ssing about in sea at Felixstowe. (my mates dad worked on the docks and somehow got hold of a large tyre which we decided would be fun to play in the sea with until we realised we had floated will out beyond the pier) TWTD's!! **sigh** Is what we have now hotter? Of course the Telegraph would run with something like this👇
So let's remove some of the rose-tinted spectacles and also look at some of that data comparing 1976 with modern heat waves
Because the 1976 nostalgia porn is wearing a bit thin at this stage

If I recall correctly the temps were generally in the high 20's with the occasional excursion into 30 or so. Maybe someone has the records to confirm that or otherwise! I was 21 at the time, so that was rather novel! I think today's 21yo's had better start getting used to what we've got now over the coming years.

Here we go, these are the records for Ipswich. https://www.extremeweatherwatc Certainly between June 22 and July 8 there's a stretch of 25c+ days, but by and large for the three summer months it's mostly low to mid twenties celcius. The other thing that strikes me is the minimum overnight temperatures, barely going over 15, as opposed to the 18/19/20 we're getting now. Plus I count only 16 days out of the 92 where there was rain. [Post edited 24 Jun 23:43]

As ever with temperatures, they can be put into perspective. I've spent a bit of time over in the Philippines during the last 3 years, obviously it's a tropical country, so you'd expect it to be a tad warm. The part I go to, has a climate that is very similar all year round. Top temperatures vary between about 27-32C for the 12 months sometimes a bit higher, night times almost never drop below 24c and not unusual for them to be in the higher 20's. Add to that non stop very high humidity, morning, noon and night and you can probably see why it doesn't seem quite so bad to me here! Though I'll admit it's hot and sticky enough!
