Happy Birthday, Big Al! Used to work at a local golf club, him and Bryan Hamilton used to play there. Bryan was always chatty and full of beans. Allan was always very reserved, but would always, without fail, tell me to get a haircut.

Bacon and Eggs, Hunter and Beattie. By some margin the best central defensive partnership I've seen at the club since the early 60's. And considering we also had Butcher and Osman, that's quite some accolade! Bit too late to say happy birthday, but not too late to say I hope he had a good one!

I well remember seeing him play on his debut against Leicester Sep 1971 - very impressed and a massive upgrade on Bobby Bell at no 5.

Funny story re Allan's debut. He was told in training that our two full-backs were both Swedes. Things didn't go well and we lost 2-1 at home to Leicester. He presumed the players in question were from Sweden and with their golden locks it seemed plausible. It was only in the dressing room afterwards that he learned Messrs Hammond and Harper were 'Suffolk Swedes' and had been born locally, rather than in Sweden.
It was also in this game that he retrieved the ball after one of the visitors' goals and on his way past grounded goalkeeper David Best, a former teammate at Oldham Athletic, he bent down and said "I see you haven't changed!" | | | |
