Same disagreement, but it goes well or badly depending on whether both sides assume good faith.
There's a real difference between two kinds of disagreement. Things like how much the state should do, or how to weigh up migration policy, are matters of values and judgement. People can look at the same facts and land in different places, and that's fine, that's what debate is for. But facts themselves aren't like that. If a claim is shown to be factually wrong, sticking with it anyway isn't a "different viewpoint" any more, it's just refusing to update. That's where discussion breaks down, and it's a fair thing to expect from anyone, whatever their politics.
Being labelled is the harder part. Losing an argument is one thing. Being assumed to hold views you don't actually hold is another, and it shuts things down fast. That happens on both sides, most people who argue politics online have been on the receiving end of it at some point.
For what it's worth, admitting your own bias rather than pretending you have none is exactly what makes for a better conversation. Not everyone will match that, but it's still worth doing. |
But facts are not always quite what they seem. Especially in the realms of economics, sociology and human behaviour. Particularly in how they intersect. Suppose that’s what you’re saying about landing in different places?
I think there are so many instances that erode public faith in our arms of state. That is a driving force behind Reform. Many people feel lied to or betrayed. I’m finding it difficult to hold back my biases in a few very high profile cases. Two recent examples, I think there were significant lies during the pandemic. I also think Lucy Letby was prosecuted in order to protect the state (in broad terms). I trace this back to the dawn of new Labour and the changes in relationship between state and electorate, that’s a significant contributor to the “rise” of reform.
