I could list 40 players for Sunderland, Leeds, Bournemouth, Brighton, Brentford, in the last couple of seasons that are elite, the right quality, and cost the same or even much less individually than the below. Some as little as £2 million, many £10-15 million.
Greaves. Akpom, Ogbenne, Walle, Johnson, McAteer, Smodz…, and a raft that are good oakhers but bit at the level the teams above recruit at Nunez, Mehmetti, Clarke, Jens, Azon.
Even Johnson as a freebie, adjusted for markets was WAY more expensive than any flop we’ve ever signed, his wages and signing in fee are why he’s going nowhere.

The paradox obviously it’s seen us have huge success in the EFL, but we’ve spent premier league resources, and have a worse 25 than our legacy group full of signings like Wes, Chaplin, Walton, Sam…, who were unbelievable value.
Maybe we were spoiled by players WAY too good for the level, coming to play for us/Paul, for not much money.
But it’s VERY obvious now our talent ID is about three levels below this standard.
It’s pure panic and Ashton playing ego fuelled football manager.
We’ve indexed ourselves (exclusively) to whether Mark can prove to himself that’s he’s elite at recruiting…, in spot if no other club at this level, ever having any exec that’s done that in their own.
He had a small team of yes men, and it’s Mark and that’s it.

With resources. Relative to this level. His recruitment is 4/10 …., and 3 of those are because he gave me the best season in the EFL as a supporter, and he deserves credit for that.
But talent ID. Yeah. He’s actually 1/10 at this level.
Heartbreaking we’ve had TWO generational opportunities to build something that lasts decades. And his ego was more important.
It’s the owners fault.
Mark isn’t the first out of control ego that want control over why he’s not good enough at.
They should try taking some responsibility for the recruitment mess!!

Other teams with the same resources. Worse legacy profile in Sunderland’s case, got a points total it would take Mark TWO AND HALF seasons to accrue.
And that’s 100% because of recruitment. And they didn’t do that by copying someone’s homework - Mark looks totally lost, LOST at talent id.

Don't agree.
Agree he made too many mistakes and needed to be dropped but people refuse to count the saves he made others wouldn't have, or the crosses he caught that otherwise would have ended up as a goal. I think he saved us as many points as he cost us.

Consider this. Back in 1978/1979 we signed two Dutchmen for the combined total of approx £360,000. I've had the maths done, today that equates to approx £2.3 million in total for both of them. I'd reckon if they were around today, no one would get them together for less than the combined total of approx £150M. Bargain? |  | | |
