Wes Burns must be one of the best value signings we’ve ever made.

But who would be the lowest return versus their transfer fee?

Stuart Slater?
Big Toto and Jon Nolan?
Adrian Paz?

Up and mainly down, following Town since 88

Got to be Sereni or Finidi George? Both signed for big fees, played for less than a season, then we had to give them away.

Sereni not just for the fee, but for the wages and general disruptiveness.

Paul Taylor. That odious little man must be in the running.

Ulrich Le Pen. £1.4m for 12 minutes of Championship football.

Paul Lambert. Made no positive changes and if what we see is to be believed then drew a pay check for quite some time after getting sacked (or got a windfall)

Can think of a couple of posters who cost nothing but have still been a huge waste of money…and time…and space.

I must admit I think this is another symptom of society's obsession with throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Just because you've seen a few dreadful posters over the years doesn't mean the medium itself is beyond saving. We managed perfectly well for decades with a carefully curated selection. A decent calendar, a map of the world, perhaps a Concorde cutaway if you were mechanically inclined, and if you were a young chap, Fiona Butler with the tennis racket or Cindy Crawford smiling back at you. Nobody came to any harm. In fact I'd argue it built character. Certainly gave you something to look at while pretending to revise.

Every generation produces its masterpieces and its disasters. That's life. We had lava lamps, brown carpets and avocado bathroom suites, but we also had proper posters. Nowadays everything's downloaded onto a phone and forgotten five minutes later. At least a good poster stayed on the wall long enough to become part of the furniture. You'd notice if it had slipped an inch.

The problem is people insist on remembering only the disasters. Mention posters and suddenly everyone acts as though the walls of Britain were plastered exclusively with motivational slogans about teamwork or, heaven forbid, the Liz Truss swimsuit calendar debacle. That's like dismissing all music because Mr Blobby once had a Christmas number one. Outliers shouldn't define an entire art form.

No, I shall continue to defend the humble poster. The classics more than compensated for the occasional lapse in judgement. Fiona Butler probably inspired half the nation's interest in tennis, Cindy Crawford undoubtedly improved the décor of countless teenage bedrooms, and even the odd naff one gave people something to laugh about. Frankly, if posters are now considered our biggest waste of money, we've lived remarkably fortunate lives.

Luca Civelli.
Unlucky with a bad injury & seemed like a decent guy, but that was £1m written off for about 10 games, when £1m was huge money.

In terms of wages vs output then recently Kalvin Phillips and Ben Godfrey probably outstrip the likes of Slater, Taylor and such by some margin. They were just flops, but the cost wasn't anywhere near the money we paid for those two.

Sereni was actually a very good goal keeper. Findi was ok until he went to the African Nations. Was utter pants when he returned.

Purely on transfer fee, I hazard to agree. He's young and I pray not, but lack of pace and right-foot make me believe we massively overpaid and will eventually offload to a lower division team.

We as a club are not a Chelsea or Man City where we can spend millions on projects. They can afford to and lose money if it goes wrong. The money we spend needs to be on players who can hit the ground running. Egeli was a project who got thrown in at the deep end, alas it didn’t really pay off. I think we will end up losing a lot of money on him. I worry the same about this Brazilian guy.

Rich Len Pen? Signed for £1.4m and played about ten minutes before he got injured.

As a percentage of our overall spend / budget at the time, Paul Taylor must be quite high up there too.

Civelli is another one who played about 14 seconds before he was injured and never seen again. Although he’s still a cult hero for his thumbs up from the stretcher.

Sereni according to what I read and heard in interviews was trouble. Good shot stopper, poor keeper. Had Wright stayed we’d not have been relegated.

Finidi was ancient. Like watching a veterans player. And yes, I was there for the Sunderland goal and the one at the start of the season v Derby. Regardless, for us he was too old.

As for Egeli, he was bought as a project. It’s too soon to write him off. Having seen him, I think he’s immensely talented but needs to play more centrally. I’ll be interested to see how he goes this season and assuming he’s played, where GON plays him

Civelli played a lot more than people remember. 17 times or so before injury struck and he looked more than decent as well.

Ulrich Le Pen however, as I have already posted....utter waste.

I’ve heard that Gav once brought Phil a load of white chocolate hobnobs. Phil took one look at them and went ‘nah’ - he doesn’t like change and only eats the original hobnobs.

Absolute waste of money - def info.

Civelli did play a few times after returning from injury, too, but was a shadow of his former talent.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
