I don't believe in the gelling bol*oc*s and personally I thank McKenna but feel this year we have more chance staying up without him we will be far more pragmatic. I may be wrong let's wait and see.

| Do we need five more? on 08:02 - Jul 23 by Olcol | Agree with this. GK, RB, LB, 2x CD, 2x MF, 1xSt. |
If we play 352, which some are suggesting, we will also need another CB.

| Do we need five more? on 12:35 - Jul 23 by OldFart71 | I think those proposing 9 are going a bit overboard. I will obviously depend on how GON plays it. We don't know if Philogene is going or if Clarke can cut it in the Premier League. Leif was exposed when we were last in the Prem, but then the midfield just wasn't up to it and when he bombed forward a huge space was left in behind him. The same could be said the other side where we have Furlong. Again is he good enough ? We obviously need another striker, but it seems GON may be keen on Akpom ? Kitty wise we are plus £60 million odd so far with only a tad under a million rising to two million for Baggott. I think we need to press Derby or whoever to buy Szmodics even at £4-5 million. Of course if Philogene departs then would have around another £30 million. |
Until we know what formation GON is intending, there's too many unknowns for me. If we go 3 at the back, then we have Greaves, Diop, Kipre, O'Shea, it's conceivable two could be injured at a time, so you'd want another CBs in at the very least. If we're four at the back, then 2 of the 4 are okay. We'd then need LB cover for Leif still, but if we went 5 in midfield, still need a LWB perhaps if Leif is earmarked for that, so a higher line perhaps on the right with Fatawu, Leif more conservative? Then we're completely heavy with 10s who won't fit the 5 midfield that well, Clarke, Janden, Mehmeti, McAteer, Egeli, Fatawu so we end up with our best players with the best strength in depth being square pegs in round holes. Suggestion would be some of them could be wing backs, but it's not what they've been doing for the majority of their times. Then two strikers or a one behind? I don't know. Nunez, Matusiwa and Taylor as your creative, holding and box-to-box in the middle of the 5 might work, but we don't have any depth there then. I think we'll go 4-2-3-1 again, but that does beg the question as to whether Diop displaces O'Shea or we're happy playing him on the left of the two. Lots to think about.

I think if we go 3atb it's more likely to be a 3-4-2-1 type approach, with "inside forwards " supporting a central striker rather than 2 up top. I think it's telling we have not been linked to any genuine central 10's this summer. It makes me feel we are more likely to line up 433 or 3421 - or some sort of hybrid where one of the central defenders can step into midfield where appropriate. Edit: so the question of how many more... - GK, R(w)B, L(w)B, CMx2, AM, ST - plus one of CB, CM or #10 depending on preferred formation. So 8 more in total? [Post edited 23 Jul 13:10]
