Not sold on the security implications with Wine (or wasn't when I looked at it a while back), but it seems SteamOS needs an AMD GPU at the moment, so I'll maybe reconsider.

Works brilliantly, particularly idiot proof if you use Heroic launcher to link to GOG. Worth mentioning that if you have an Amazon prime account, search up Luna and look through the "claim games" section. They don't shout from the rooftops about it but I've picked up lots of old windows games for "free" this way, e.g. fallout, x-com, syndicate, elder scrolls, tomb raider etc.

Not specifically SteamOS (Fedora), but do use Steam mostly. I also use Nvidia and there is no Linux specific issue there, so if that is specific to steam OS, look into Bazzite or CachyOS which look to make the "SteamOS" experience as easy as possible for non-techies. This should be you go to for whether a game you want to play will run on Linux: https://www.protondb.com/ Also, Wine is just a compatibility layer. If you are using Steam, then you are using Wine (or specifically a fork of it developed by Valve called Proton). There are no specific security concerns with Wine, so anything in that area is most likely FUD. You never need to deal with Wine directly. Steam handles this for you. The only tranche of games that you may have issues with are some multiplayer online games which have kernel level anticheat (a nasty thing that no one should be giving access to on their PCs... now that IS a security concern!) but ProtonDB will let you know if that is likely to be an issue.
