3-5-2 / 5-3-2 / 3-5-1-1 11:05 - Aug 2 with 1023 viewsSimonds92

Lot's of people suggesting since O'Neil came in we'll be looking at some sort of variation of 3-5-2. I think based on what I've seen we can put that assumption to bed. We seem to be sticking with the 4-2-3-1 but its very different in how we approach it. Our wingers are very wide, our full backs in possession are both inverted and bombing on while the CDM drops in to fill the gap. It's very Pep in style I think and in all honesty I'm not convinced a team scrapping around at the bottom of the league can play that way. We're either going to stay up comfortably, or it's going to be a disaster.

I know McKenna tried inverting Leif at the start of last season, to bring him almost to a central midfield position and it didn't work at all for me. I think this is different as they're expected to go beyond the midfield.

While I'm raising the role of full backs. Just to highlight Furlong as well, I think he's bloody brilliant. Deserves his chance in the Premier League.

I don't think we currently have the players for 5/3 at the back. especially yesterday where we played 2 teams. We are going to need to sign a few more before we can use that shape.

We don't. We'll need one more CB and another LB minimum

I think we will switch between 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-2-1… on 11:26 - Aug 2 with 891 viewsunstableblue

The latter for those tougher away games at the Emirates and alike (Gary O’Neil has talked already about that need for flexibility at those places).

The question is how easy is it do that in game.

OShea and Burns on the right perhaps make it easier to do that. Where as Fatuwa wouldn’t give you that in game flexibility.

Sunderland will see 4-2-3-1 I believe. I guess that might be this line-up given current players on the books:

————- Scherpen
OShea Diop Greaves Davis
——-Nunez Humphreys
—Fatuwa—Mehmeti——-Maeda
————Emersonn

Couple of things of note from pre-season - Greaves seems in very good form; Fatuwa really hugs the touchline, doesn’t come inside as much as a Clarke or Philogene.

We're playing wingers as central midfielders in these games. We could very conceivably play 3-5-2 with current personnel, even if some players are out of position, if that's the way we're going to approach the season.

Adaptability is the watch word. However im inclined to agree that we simply dont have the players at this stage to execute the variations. If we secure the players we need we might start to see more progress on in and out of possession structures.

We only have 4CBs in the whole squad. Furlong could play there but we have been busy using him elsewhere. Players from other positions cant really cover CB it requires height and physicality.
