Turning to next Saturday's match against Union Berlin - a city in which I've lived, spent many many holidays over the years, and have a deep affection for - I thought it might be useful to put together a little guide for those who may not have been before, and might appreciate a little additional information. I'll spread this out over a few posts in the thread. Do feel free to add your own questions, and I'll help where I can.
I'm sure BerlinerBlue will also have their own thoughts!
Getting There
If you're arriving by plane, you'll fly into Berlin Brandenburg International (on the former Schönefeld site), which is situated on the south-eastern edge of the city. There's no need to worry about a taxi or other sort of transfer into the city centre - the rail network will have you covered. The station is situated beneath Terminal 1. If you're arriving into Terminal 2 (which I think serves Ryanair flights) it's a short walk to the station, which may not be particularly well signposted (see below). From the station, there are a couple of options depending on your final destination.
If you're headed for central Berlin, or anywhere North/South/West of the city centre, you can take the FlughafenExpress (marked as 'FEX') which will take you straight to Hauptbahnhof (via Südkreuz and Potsdamer Platz) in about 25 minutes.
If the eastern side of the city is your aim, then you might be better served by the S-Bahn. The S9 and S85 both run through the south-eastern suburbs, with the S85 stopping at Ostkreuz before heading to the north-eastern suburbs, and the S9 running through Ostbahnhof on its way to the city centre and the western suburbs. If you get a chance go to the former East Berlin and see the remnants of the wall. It's a real eyeopener. I went a couple of years ago for the first time since I visited Berlin as a child when the wall was in full force.
Amplemann are on the street lights too and have real character.
Berliner Weisse is the local beer and they do a summer fruit flavour which is really nice | | | |

Cheers Zx, took your advice on the buildings I wanted to see, took a deep dive walk around that area on Friday afternoon, discovered some more gems! Travel became easier after getting to grips with the underground, thou I will say our London signage/tube maps do seem easier to understand! Will visit again on a non football trip as I couldn’t fit In Templehoff or the Stasi museum! Cheers again! | | | |
