Jonathan Wilson on Libero podcast this morning said 'none of the three clubs are getting anywher close to Sunderland's expenditure' last year. He's normally well informed. This, combined with the fact my non-ipswich friends didn't realise how much we're spending makes me think that we are very much going under the radar.
I think they could be a bit surprised when they see our team at the end of august!

The margins were tighter than a lot of people perceive. If we'd conceded just one fewer goal in each home game against teams who finished in the bottom half of the table, that would have harvested nine more points, putting us close on the heels of Spurs in 17th.
A marginally better overall defence - plus not so much running out of steam at the end of matches - would very likely have seen us to safety, even with the flaws elsewhere on the pitch.
Edit: 20 points might not be so hard to find as it looks on the surface.

I think there's 2 ways of looking at it. From an ITFC perspective we've spent money, we're feeling quite bullish and excited at the prospect of seeing the new additions and hoping we can survive, and rightly so.
I suppose the more pessimistic view and as a neutral you might say we've bought a player who got relegated at Burnley last season, a winger who got relegated with Leicester for the past 2 years, 2 from Fulham - a club we aspire to outpace but they deem them surplus, Enciso who didn't make it at Brighton and got relegated here last time, a keeper who also didn't make it at Brighton and nobody would've lost any sleep over had he gone to Hull or Coventry instead, a huge fee on an unproven forward with only a handful of goals to his name in professional football, Maeda who has looked good albeit in a pub league, and Chuba Akpom.
Not to be negative about it but we do have a tendency as fans to get carried away at times. |
New and second-hand parts being bought into a garage all depend on the chief mechanic & his assistants as to whether they are lovingly and thoughtfully refurbed & recreated to become a well-oiled, high-performing, unique new machine; or rust is allowed to remain on them and they're unintelligently assembled into a stuttering, backfiring jalopy.

Very true, but ultimately when they're revving on the start line its still going to be difficult to beat a Bugatti Chiron however well oiled our Audi RS6 is.
Maybe we can beat the couple of slower cars on the track, and 1 of the quicker ones gets a blow out. |  | | |

When it comes to fans as well as to a lot of lazy pundits, who can’t see beyond London and Manchester, we might well be going under the radar.
But unfortunately, I doubt that any of the other PL clubs will be quite so lazy in their outlook. They would’ve (or will) sent scouts to our preseason matches with analysis completed on our senior players.
From a clubs point of view I think that it’s almost impossible to go under the radar but from a fans and pundits point-of-view it’ll be all too easy. |  | | |
