Especially if big club bias continues as I'm sure none of the 3 promoted clubs would have got away with the second Man U goal .
| Mental strength on 09:53 - Aug 31 with 377 views | TheGentlemanViking | Absolutely, any elite level team requires mental fortitude. From where I was watching yesterday, that didn't really seem to be the problem though. Let's put yesterday in perspective. - We're Ipswich Town, they are Manchester United. They are a Champions League team, playing a newly promoted team, the week after they were humbled by another, at home, the biggest crowd we'll face this season. The pressure was all on them. - Man for man, every single United player gets in this Ipswich team. All of them. I don't think there's really any you can make a convincing argument for the other way. - Had to replace our starting striker with a very underwhelming and frankly very limited option at half time. - We controlled the game for the first 55 minutes, we broke with speed and precision down both wings, scored a great goal and looked like we could go again. - An unfortunate slip, a controversial goal ( ridiculous, little known rule, would have applied to any team) and an immediate penalty against turned the game. - United's quality started to show as soon as they were ahead. We didn't lose our heads, we kept trying to compete, tried an alternative system, pulled a goal back. - The scoreline didn't reflect the game, one of those games where everything that could have gone against us, did, and the team with quality vastly beyond our own rightly won the game. It's quality on the pitch we're lacking, not mental strength. And this game really doesn't highlight anything, we'd be crazy to expect to win that game. The lads put in a shift though and against lesser opposition I feel we'll have enough to compete. | | | |

That's what we said in 24/25, but after being whipped by the big teams we also ended up with stupid losses and throwing points away against the "lesser" teams. Remember the debacle at Brentford and Leicester. The home losses to Saints, Wolves and Bournemouth. Losing twice to Palace. Giving away 2 pens at Fulham. It remains to be seen if we can stamp out the latter.
| Mental strength on 10:18 - Aug 31 with 308 views | BloomBlue | You will always get strange results, even more so promoted teams. As I've said on another thread Leeds lost 5-0 at Arsenal in their 2nd game last season, could have easily been 7 or 8. But they didn't panic, even though they basically had the same defence as from the championship, and they avoided relegation. Sunderland had a great season, especially their defence but look at Ballard a player from their championship season, he looked terrible last week and he played 30 games in the PL for them last season. They also lost against Forest 5-0 Strange results can happen. The first 2 or 3 games won't define our season as it didnt teams like Leeds last season its about building momentum throughout the season. | | | |

However, I think the result against Sunderland showed we are several notches higher in terms of competitiveness against non-top-four sides. In 2024-25 we were being out-skilled and out-strengthed by pretty much everybody.

Sunderland beat Fulham without getting into 3rd gear. Last weekend was a superb result. I think we got a head of ourselves yesterday after the 1st half and went toe to toe. We have some promise and if we can game manage against midtable and lower opposition we have a great chance.
