Royal William and Ipswich Arms both went in 1999. I remember that well as I bought my first house in Chevallier Street round about the same time. Ipswich Arms was an Ind Coope pub from memory.
The Spotted Cow was round the corner from me but I don't think that lasted much longer either. There's a Farm Foods there now.
As for Town Centre, somebody mentioned the Cock and Pye and the bar the other side to what it is now. That all changed around 1997.
Some good nights in town years ago, the Swan-albeit with its sticky carpet and rank toilet- was a regular haunt for me along with Mannings, Spread Eagle (the only pub in Ipswich I know of where the bar runs along the side of the road) and Earl Roberts (General Gordon) which was closed due to water damage late 90s. Val who was landlady at the Earl went on to run the Steamboat.
And pre Isaac days, who used to drink in the Malt Kiln? |
Blimey! The Malt Kiln AND The Steamboat.
So easy to forget these old names/haunts.
How about the Lord Nelson when it had what seemed to me a very small public bar (that still had a pool table I think!)?
Brewers Arms (I assume is still going) and maybe Half Moon and Star (long gone) were quite "compact and bijou" IIRC. |  |

Ah, this is a shame
I'm in my early 40s and the Swan was fantastic in the late 00s/early10s. Had one hell of an alternative scene and Swanfest each year was an absolute delight. Some genuinely half decent bands would come and play there, well before the Brighten the Corners festival brought good music back to the town again |  | | |

I remember at least one fight in the Swan but it was a fairly tame affair which mainly involved people pushing against each.
I suppose you could say it was a bundle, with nothing like the sort of violence that one might have seen in larger cities.
And there were certainly no weapons or broken glasses used. | | | |
