I am surprised that there was not a lot about them here today considering who is bankrolling the club. The raw courage of running up the stairs of a burning skyscraper while every sensible person is running away is quite mind blowing. People who were not on duty coming in to assist their colleagues. It amplifies the sorry state that America has got itself in now where it seems to be scratch your way to the top and everyone for themselves. Today focuses this selfish culture on America but unfortunately it is not confined to 'the leader of the free world'.

This powerful image captures FDNY Firefighter Mike Kehoe on the morning of September 11, 2001, climbing the stairwell inside the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
While thousands were fleeing downward, Mike was going up — into the fire, the smoke, and the unknown — guided by duty, courage, and an unwavering will to help.
An eyewitness who watched him ascend later said:
"People were panicked, running for their lives. Then I saw this fireman, charging up the stairs with no hesitation. It was one of the most powerful things I’ve ever witnessed."
The photo was taken by John Labriola as he evacuated from the 71st floor. Just moments later, the tower would collapse.
Mike Kehoe survived. In reflecting on that day, he humbly shared:
"As we were going up, people kept saying ‘Good luck,’ ‘Be safe.’ Of course, I was scared — but I was just doing my job. I only wish we could’ve done more.”
Though Mike made it out, 343 of his fellow FDNY brothers did not.
This image endures not just as a photograph — but as a symbol of unshakable bravery, selfless service, and the spirit of every first responder who ran into danger when the rest of the world ran away.

My daughter tells me that those staircases were very tight too (apparently there’s one at the memorial site that she saw on a school trip to NY last year). You get a bit of a feel for it from that picture, there’s not a lot of room. It must have been chaos on those stairwells.
I hadn’t realised the City had been denying survivors access to the truth about the long term health impacts of that day either. It’s only recently that Mamdani released the confidential docs that proved the authorities knew if was a major health hazard conducting rescue/recovery ops in the vicinity for weeks/months after. Bastards. Loads have died from cancers and other diseases since. |  |

See other thread, Swansea. I brought up first responders there. Reading about it today, 9400 have passed away since 9/11. 10s of 1000s are and will suffer illness and premature death from it.

Stairwells n stuff? The building was fine for when it was built - around 1970/71 but by 2001 from an H&S perspective these buildings carried risk in so many ways.
Those tight staircases? I know it sounds daft but I didn’t know that. My first thought was the Portman/Cobbold Stand. Obviously no risk at all by comparison being what it is but they are tight and narrow reflecting the age of the stand - about the same as the WTC. Just shows what might be fit for purpose once upon a time might not be now. |  | | |
