However, stop the daft challenges and avoid getting dragged into the game the Czechs want it to become and you have to expect that they'll get worn down and England's quality should come through.

Yep, page whatever of the coaching manual. At least they stop short of taking one each onto the pitch with them, for frequent reference.

Cherki is one, but he plays for the team that shall not be named. We have one in Enciso - exciting players who will suddenly dribble past the people and bang one in from 30 yards.

I’ve no idea who played last night, but that’s a common theme across football now unfortunately. It’s probably worse in the Championship and below where you have players who struggle to implement it. That’s why you end up with Football By Numbers managers like Russell Martin boring the pants of fans with predictable and error-play play as players struggle to beat a press.

I've been watching football since the 1990s and it was *always* boring to watch internationals were one high-ranked team was trying to score past a defensive low-ranked team. That's not a "modern football" problem, it's a "9 men all defending the penalty area" problem.

But where does the idea of 9 men defending the penalty area come from? I've been watching football since the earlyish 1960's and it wasn't boring then. Fitness of players has improved markedly for sure. Pure technical ability? Very little to nothing.

That wasn't the point I was making (so possibly my bad for not explaining it very well!). Rather that these players always seem to take so many extra touches, slow things down, often when there's really good opportunities on. Shots that could be taken, crosses made, but passed up because they seem to be programmed to make the short easy pass. Or they will hold on to the ball too long and run straight into 2 or 3 players. Some really strange decision making at times. It isn't necessarily boring, just frustrating. Like I said, not just an issue with England last night, but modern football generally.
