TV questions - OLED/QLED and wall mounts 13:55 - Oct 19 with 1144 viewsSteve_M

I need an additional TV, currently have an 8 year old Samsung 4K TV which is absolutely fine. The direct equivalent is even cheaper than that was or I can pay a bit more for OLED or QLED? Are they worth it?

This will be a medium TV, probably 43 inch diameter.

Also, anyone have any good recommendations for a wall mount? One that allows the TV angle to change easily.

Thanks

LG OLED C. i swear by ‘em.

Just make sure you turn off all that spyware.

I'd suggest getting an LG. Replaced all my Sony ones a while ago with LG as they manufacture all the OLED panels anyway for a lot of brands (including Sony)

OLED is better, but sometimes twice the price of QLED. All depends how picky you are and how far you sit from the tv etc. For 43inch, OLED might not be worth it.

Another consideration is that an OLED is always an OLED, on smaller QLEDs they will reduce the number of dimming zones which makes them perform worse.

The main advantage of OLED is its black levels. QLED with microLED backlight can get pretty close for less money.

QLED by itself doesn't give you the black levels though. There is also LG QNED which is just their version of QLED and often a bit cheaper.

Depends how much you are going to use it. For a second TV wouldn't bother with OLED unless money is no object.

I am reviewing TV's at the moment..

I had been a devout Panasonic TV buyer for many years but they seem to have totally lost their way.

In the frame are the Samsung S95H (which seems to be getting the best reviews) LG G6 or Sony Bravia 9 II. Not sure if they are all in your screen size (I am ideally looking at 75/77inch)

With regards to wall mounts, the only thing I have found with extendable arm 9aka full motion) mounts is they never seen to look level in any position, which is a bit of an OCD thing for me. Some are just 'too adjustable' Vogels are pretty much the benchmark in these things but so many other brands and options all probably significantly cheaper. Samsung have their own selection of mounts, but VESA is a standard size so all should fit all.

Is it less about the TV and more about the input?

What are you pushing into it?

Depends on budget, light levels and use case.

I was told not to bother with OLED at my price range as the performance wouldn't be better than a higher spec of a different technology.

I'd check Which (for £7 you can cancel after a month) and then give them a look and have a chat in person at Currys. We ended up with a Hisense QLED which was the top recommendation at my price point in both cases. I'm extremely happy with it for the money paid.

Thanks all, a bit more to think about here.

Got my wall mount off Amazon, bog standard Amazon brand I think. It wasn't particularly expensive but does the job well. Sits fairly flush to the wall and can be angled. Got a socket behind the TV as I can't deal with wires, but enough room to tie them up within it as well.

I'm no TV expert and didn't do a heap of research, but I moved house a couple of years ago and invested in a new one. I looked at the OLED but it was quite a bit more expensive than the alternatives so I didn't go for it (rightly or wrongly). IIRC it was about £1.5k vs half that on the 65" Samsung model, so went for the QLED. Very happy with it so far I must say, the picture quality is excellent. Only went Samsung as I had one before and that was also very good to me.
