But you're using electricity to make something which is then used for fuel... I can understand it has a niche for when gas cannot be replaced but electrification is far cheaper for most things as it's going to be way more efficient than things like this.

It's only really valid for instances where you need that high energy per kg (Aviation for example is weight critical and a battery can simply not compete with fuel) or for specific chemical processes. In aviation, if we want to have any reasonable amount of air travel, will need to shift to things like green hydrogen because electrification doesn't make sense. Using this sort of tech for gas heating our homes or just to maintain our current consumption, would just be stupid.
| Anyone heard of this? Synthetic gas production on 00:41 - Oct 29 with 1011 views | Guthrum | The Germans ran much of their war effort on synthetic gasoline during WWII, lacking access to oilfields other than those in Romania. At least they did until the Allies bombed a lot of their production facilities. The price sounds very good, but it is likely predicated on using their own solar electricity generating capacity to run the process, thus hard to see it being scaleable to a truly national level (which does not seem to be what they are aiming at, anyway). | |

Which was why I asked if the whole business model of the company sounds too good to be true. As Dan pointed out, it is using energy to create another kind of energy, but it's carbon neutral and they're claiming costs of between 10 and 20 euros to generate 1MwH of gas within a few years, many times cheaper than the current price.

I guess on top of this there are massive levels of investment for the machinery, connecting to the gas grid, solar parks. All sounds too good to be true.
