Not sure if you have tried this but I was all set to have mine repaired but before I took it in someone told me the charging point "breaking" is commonly just lint in the hole itself stopping the points connecting. I scraped it out with a cocktail stick and low and behold loads of fluff etc came out and from then on it has worked without fail

This, it has saved me many times on multiple Apple products and is as easy as described here! Give it a try!!
Same thing happened to my iphone5. It had got wet in my pocket along with my portable charger in a rain storm. It turned out the connector on the charger had turned green due to moisture. They checked it in the shop and it was ok. No fee. I think I paid £25 for a new charging port for my iPad Air a couple of years ago. If you do take it in get them to test it first and quote before committing to paying any money.

Have you tried holding the power button and the home button at the same time for 5-10 seconds?
Yes about 100 times. I do that and it resets and comes back on with 1% battery it then lasts 5 minutes and powers off again and I have to wait 5 more minutes before resetting again

iPhone was an independent - they put it on their own charger/circuit tester for an hour and it was fine. They didn't charge me, just my phone (sorry, lol). iPad was EE I think.
