Surely easier to stay in the EU and make use of the actual existing trade deal with Japan?

Doubt you would be a fan of Japans economic policies. National debt of >230% GDP which is the largest in the world. The difference between them and Greece is that they owe the majority of it to their own people rather than external creditors.

He knows a no deal will mean the UK is going to be a lot stronger outside the EU and he's scared given the trade deal Japan has with EU, the EU won't let Japan do a deal with the UK.

That is total bobbins.

"Worlds 3rd biggest economy with a GDP of 5 trillion scared that worlds largest trading bloc with a GDP of 18 trillion won't let it do trade deals with worlds 5th largest economy with a GDP of 3 trillion".

If you read that a few times it might all start to make a bit of sense.
