Thought I'd check Bristol Rovers board 14:18 - Sep 1 with 1308 viewsTerry_Nutkins

Ahead of our first meaningful game I checked the Bristol Rovers board. They seem really happy with their transfer business and generally most positive they have been in years (one of their words)...interesting as it seems a harder first game than I gave it credit.

We're very much the reverse of that. Pre-season performances were not terrible but the Cambridge one felt like it made the prem team games worse. Signings are completely unspectacular but long term i think Cornell could be good and Ward is an astute signing. Hawkins could go either way but a different option.

The general mood in and out the camp seems bad. When was the last time we were feeling this bad going into a season.

Can only hope for a bit of a seige mentality and we come out fighting Sat. In the space of 6 weeks I've increasingly moved over to hope mode rather than expectation. Come on Ipswich, let's have a good start! A few early wins and we can do this!!

The biggest frustration for me with the pre season games is I don't feel like we're any closer to knowing our side now than we were a month ago. It's not helped by the large squad and needing to get everyone as match fit as possible, but the fact Woolfenden and Chambers haven't played a minute of football alongside each other this pre season for example, what's that about?

I hope we've got enough about us to start the season fast and see what happens. Despite the absolute balls up Lambert is making of things, we've got a good squad of players, who I don't doubt remain committed to the cause, despite the lack of leadership and direction from the top.

I am sure they will be looking to find JCH replacement still. Doesn't look as though they have replaced him yet, will be a big gap to fill.

I think the 433 makes sense as a more settled formation and it's easier to fit the players in because of it.

I'll go for:

Holy

KVY Chambers Woolfenden Ward

Bishop Downes Huws

Jackson Norwood Edwards

Subs: Cornell, Nsiala, Kenlock, Skuse, Judge, Hawkins, El Mizouni.

Lots of opportunity to swap players in and out as well as bring in players like Lankester, Dobra, Folami, Wilson, Donacien etc. and slot them straight in. I still think there's a bit of a Judge conundrum but he might work as a wildcard if everyone actually understands their role a bit more in a settled formation.

Now watch us start playing wingbacks or a flat 442 with Judge and Edwards as wide midfielders again ...

Yeah I think 4-3-3 is the way forward.

I would possibly look to start Freddie ahead of Edwards at the moment, in that wide forward role. Otherwise I think that side is there or thereabouts. If Downes moves on it's going to be a lot to ask of Huws, but perhaps he adopts that box-to-box role and Dozzell comes in as a playmaker sitting a little deeper? Or maybe Skuse gets a last hurrah.

I like Judge, on his day last season he looked as good as anyone at this level, but those days were few and far between. I do wonder if the extended break might've helped players like him who have had injury problems.

Completely forgot Sears. I know he's had injury problems but he's not really stood out for me over the past 3 or 4 years anyway. Think he'll need to show a bit more at his age and with his experience.

That's far & away the biggest issue. We do have a problem trying to give 40 professionals game time & get them match fit. I wonder if the two mickey mouse cup games will be treated as an extension of pre-season? Or will we put out potentially our best XI against Bristol & treat Arsenal U21s as a reserve fixture? That makes more sense to me.

I know what you are saying but I don't think Lambert has had much choice in terms of the post Covid circumstances and nursing players with niggles ensure we don't have any more longer term crocks. Given the two cup games before league proper it does make sense to use these to start to bed a settled side down (well the first one at least).

Interesting point re chambers and Woolfenden. Hadn't realised that. I can't help thinking we will see Nsiala start the season as 1st choice presumably alongside Woolf...fair play at least to Nsiala. He's come back looking sharper and better. Doesn't fill be with confidence but his abuse has been bad from fans. Wonder if he can prove everyone wrong...

Agree with that, why on earth did we play Judge as a wide forward against Cambridge. I do fear we will end up with Judge out wide somewhere so we can get Bishop in as well.
