Your Health data being centralised and commercialised 09:40 - May 26 with 437 views | homer_123 | You maybe (may not) be aware that Health Records are being/ have been centralised by the Gov with a view to allowing AI to plough through data to provide better analysis and diagnosis of health conditions (which I would suspect we all support). The bit the Gov are less keen to talk about is that said data will be available for Tech and Pharma (and others) to use for their own purposes (suspect many will be less supportive of this angle). What's more - against GDPR guidelines, if you don't want your data shared in this way - you need to 'opt out' - GDPR advises that in such situations and with data of this nature, this should be an 'opt in' process. The Gov have already tried and failed in this before but during the Pandemic, they've gone and done it - see some information below from Foxglove on this: https://www.foxglove.org.uk/news/nhs-health-data-fighting-for-your-right-to-be-h https://www.foxglove.org.uk/news/success-uk-government-concedes-lawsuit-over-23m Now, personally, I fully support using data for better health outcomes....I might even be convinced that sharing data with research and pharma companies to develop better medicine, vaccines etc. would be a good thing - but to share with big tech companies etc.....no, not good. You can opt-out here: https://digital.nhs.uk/services/national-data-opt-out [Post edited 26 May 2021 10:25]

Your Health data being centralised and commercialised on 09:55 - May 26 with 390 views | StokieBlue | I've not followed but isn't the data obfuscated? Obviously depending on the level of obfuscation it might be possible to work records back to an individual but it should also be possible to obfuscate the data in such a way that it's very useful for medical research but still private to the individual. I'm with you, no issues in using obfuscated data for medical research, no so happy about it being used by commercial companies (although that does depend on the company and the reason - there is overlap between medical research and private companies). Yep - data is obfuscated, not entirely sure to what degree. My main concerns are - you have to 'opt out' - under GDPR, data of this nature, you'd normally have to 'opt in' to share such personal information. And, as we agree, the sharing with commercial companies I'm not happy about - as I say, there is an argument, for example, that pharma could use such data to provide better vaccines etc. but the likes of Microsoft, Amazon etc?

Well I'm sure if they offered Town fans cashback theyd be up for it ;) The GDPR opt in requirement is exempted in this instance because the data is considered "significant national interest". I think the issue is even if you opt out now, and weve already been round this medical data loop a few times in the history of the NHS, they only have to create a new data sharing project and all your existing data sharing decisions are then ignored, voided, assuming they were ever properly implemented in the first place.
