Perspective 23:23 - Jul 11 with 491 views | MerseyBlue | At the start of the tournament, I ran a poll as to how deep into the competition England would go. Of the 84 respondents, 24 thought we'd make it to the final, with 17 of those believing we'd lift the trophy. It hasn't worked out that way, at times it has been hard to watch, on other occasions we've looked a force to be reckoned with. In the end, we sat too deep in the second half and gave the Italians the encouragement to push on. In extra time there were flashes of something, energy back in the legs, a bit of hope that we might get it done. In the end, we fell short. We can question some of the decisions, but by the same token, the same man making those decisions has led us to a World Cup semi final, and a European Championship final. It's painful to go out on penalties, I genuinely thought we'd win the shoot out and get the monkey well and truly off our back. Pickford did everything he could to keep us in the shoot out, but the three misses sealed our fate. I'm disappointed, but I'm not angry. They did far better than I expected at the start of the tournament. This now needs to be a learning experience that we use to get ourselves over the line in Qatar. I really hope that Rashford, Sancho, Saka and Sterling don't get hounded with racist abuse, but I think we all know they will. I really hope our fans don't disgrace themselves and the rest of us when they descend on London, but I suspect some will. I really hope we don't chastise Gareth Southgate for falling at the last hurdle, but I'm sure we will. I for one am proud of the effort the boys have put in, and the professional attitude with which they and Southgate have conducted themselves with. Next time it will be different.

We're in a good place, as hard as it is to take right now - lots of young talent already in the side, with plenty more waiting in the wings. Think we need to be more aggressive as this team develops, when we turn it on I really don't think anyone can live with us and I only hope that as time goes by we get a bit more self-belief to tear teams apart.

An England team achieved something most of us never thought we’d see and came the width of a post of winning it. This England side being the youngest in the tournament and at times playing football no one can live with. I’d love us to play with the handbrake off a little more do we always need 2 defensive midfielders for example?

Third youngest, apparently, not youngest.

I’m sure I heard we had the youngest squad! Oh well still we will come again and will get better with this experience.
