The weirdo was helping wrap Christmas gifts for the poor, when he could have been quaffing champagne at a Christmas quiz.

Thanks for that. Unbelievable work and commitment from Dornelly and the other volunteers.

But I’m 50% truly inspired and 50% f@#&ing angry that ordinary people filling this gap has been normalised in the UK.

Meanwhile our politics is dominated by largely imaginary issues and self-interest that ends up putting the heaviest burdens on the least powerful.

Big Society innit !!
Inspirational but she is literally mentally and physically destroying herself in the process. I think we may be heading for a long, hot Summer.

I don’t know about anyone else but I had no idea you could be rejected by a food bank.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Poll: With Evans taking 65% in Huddersfield, is the Banter Era over?

Indeed.

I think the underfunding of local authorities is one of the most damaging policies of recent decades. People don’t seem to be capable of connecting the dots to realise that what’s bad in local areas has the fingerprints of an immoral and uncaring central government fueled by the dodgiest neoliberal ideology.

Letting people like Dornelly pick up the pieces and shoulder the burden (at enormous cost to themselves) is verging on the criminal.

This should be headline news in the UK and politicians need to lay out their plans for resolving it as if it were the emergency and scandal it really is.

I have done a (very small) bit of work with a food bank near me and never heard this. Absolutely awful.

I suppose food banks only have so much food to go around.

A sad reflection of the society we have become. Trouble is those with power see this as perfectly acceptable which of course it isn’t.

Indeed.

Incredible that we’ve collectively come to accept this type of deep injustice and lack of basic human essentials as some sort of unavoidable side-effect of society. And just the way life is.

But it isn’t. That’s also what the Victorians told themselves about the poor and the same reasoning was provably wrong.

The British are fairly unique in Northwestern Europe believing that this is somehow normal.
