What exactly is this Nations League ? 18:49 - Jun 4 with 782 viewsArnieM

It’s not connected to the works cup or European cup is it? So using just a meaningless international ?

I suppose I’m asking is this a new competition coz I can’t recall hearing about before now . Seems a a bit of a pointless competition to me

1) It is an international cup (within Europe) in its own right, so some silverware for National teams to aim for.

2) It provides entry into the Euros for four teams that didn’t otherwise qualify automatically.

3) It provides entry to the next World Cup for up to two nations that wouldn’t otherwise qualify.

The rules are fiendishly tortuous (especially those for promotion, relegation, Euros qualification and the slender possibility of World Cup qualification). Even the Wikipedia page sends my head spinning!

This basically covers it. I think it's a positive because it reduces the number of pointless friendlies. It also means the top teams can play each other and ensures minnows like Andorra, Malta etc actually have some winnable games. They still get the chance to play against the big boys in the World Cup and Euro qualifiers so it's a nice balance.
